Hello to all !!

I did a search, did not find what I was looking for. I have 3 keys for my 08. 2 are black and 1 red (all Yamaha for the record)

The one black key I use 100% of the time will start the bike, always has. The red key will start the bike, (tried it yesterday for the first time) The spare key does not start the bike. The black key that does not start the bike, everything else works when I use this spare key, meaning the dash lights up, tach and speedo do there thing, seat and side bags open and close properly. The only thing that does not happen (with the 1 black key) that I am aware of is the ECU does not make a sound when you turn this key "to the on position" in the ignition switch.

Questions. Is there a chip that needs to be programmed? Again, I did a search, found lots of info on a spare key. People buying from ebay etc, but I couldn't find anything on this specific issue. If there is a thread(s) for this, could someone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks !!
Rick

What specifically did you try searching on? Just saying you searched doesn't really help us help you much. Thx. ;)

Hint: As you're in Canada you might try searching on immobilizer? Various threads talk about the distinction of keys in different countries.

Awesome ....found it...THANKS very much Ignacio!!

No use asking the USA gents, it's your immobiliser.

Really hope you have the red master key or you are F*^#ed.

It does have one doesn't it?

Costs about $3500 AUD if you have lost it or it doesn't come with the bike.

New ECU and immobiliser, all new keys and barrels.

Didn't we teach you ex-colonials how to read? OP's 2nd paragraph "I have 3 keys for my 08. 2 are black and 1 red" then in the 3rd "The red one will start the bike".
Sheesh.

Ah, I know, you've been at the XXXX again, all those letters get a bit fuxxy. Never mind :drinks: .

I was wondering that too, but wasn't 100% sure there wasn't a difference between a "red" key and a "red master" key. But, since I don't know how to spell immobiz(s)er or colo(u)r consistently I probably should stick to wondering why throttles are on the left side for British FJRs. ;)

There is a way to copy the chip data and burn it to a fob that can be used with a regular key to start the bike.

Had a similar problem trying to get a set of spare keys with no red key from the previous owner.

PM me for more info.

.... But, since I don't know how to spell immobiz(s)er ...
Perhaps that's why you Americans don't get one

Who knows. I also own a Huskvharnia with a sprocket on the wrong side that is warrantied by an Austrian company that that bought the brand from a company in Germany with an engine made in China and finally assembled in Italy.....and they call their version Ein Immob防盗izzatore.

I just know that I took one of my coveted red master keys, securely taped it inside the dash area near the wireless receiver in perpetuity, and then use a regular spare key I had made. (hey...you like how I kind of brought the topic back around to something the OP might be interested in?)

It seems to start fine and nobody has tried to steal it just yet.

^^^^ Seems pretty simple mcatrophy, great information...sure glad I have a lowly US version w/o added key drama!

Yeah, well, it keeps our insurance rates down a little. So far (touching wood), never given me a problem, however it's a different story if the key switch ever needs replacing.

Well I am sorry for not reading the passage re having the red master key.

It was about 5.30 here in the AM lying down in bed.

Just because of that, you Americans give me curry on my spelling, the CORRECT WAY to spell immobiliser or colour.

You guys are just barbarians & hack everything to suit yourself.

We speak English in Australia but have good old Aussie slangs

LOL LOL all in good fun. Let us know how you go, cheers.

A lot of cop bikes here Down Under can be bought cheap at auctions, mind you they bring the market value down a lot.

The cops normally sell them off after 2 years.

A lot do not come with the master key and the new owners don't realise it, can be very very costly.

They can get a spare key coded but it will never be a master key with it's functions.

Learned at the NERDs ride the FJRs north of the boarder the keys have a chip in it and how costly it can get if lost. Glad I don't have to deal with that because I'm not that good at keeping track of small things like that long term. Hope you don't have to spend a lot of dough on this rgonan.

As for the Aussies, spelling words isn't the only thing they do wrong. They also ride their FJRs upside down.

I'd be interested to hear about this. I have an extra non-chip key on my key ring (I use it for the bags, seat and gas cap to save the $$$ chip key). If I try to start the bike with that key - even with the immobilizer key right beside it, the bike won't start and the security light flashes. I'd think that whatever chip you use would have to be inside the transponder ring.

Buying a replacement OEM key will be expensive. FYI, you can order chip keys (that will need programming using the prescribed method with the red key), from ebay (offshore) for reasonably cheap. One friend of mine says you can order chips separately, and of course the fatter keys without the chip in it (remove logo, push the release to disassemble).

The chip must be in proximity to the immobilizer ring....... hold a known good chip key beside it and try the non-chip key. Should work.

Anyway, if I were the OP, first thing to try is reprogramming the original key to determine if the chip is usable.
