2013 Iron Butt Rally - The Inside View

Amen. I hope he recovers quickly. ... but I'm also disappointed as an armchair participant. I was sooo hoping for a repeat of last year's neck-and-neck epic rides.

    Tying Stuff Down

+1 on rokstraps - I picked up a couple of pairs just to have in the saddlebags on longer trips. Nice, secure strap, easy to install/remove, nice to your paint.

Thanks Brian & Marissa for another great Tech Day!

Thanks for having us over, Brian/Marissa - nice to meet a few locals and check out my farkling opportunities for the winter. Your driveway is honestly the scariest thing I've taken the FJR down in a long time, though :)

    Do all windscreens wobble?

I'm not sure about "all" I have this one: https://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FJR1300prod.html I believe it's the "Large 2006+", but not entirely certain, as it was installed by the previous owner. Installed on an '07. He'd mentioned something about the stock screen wobbling, and that this...

FS/Trade, Sargent World Sport Performance seat, GenII

Don't know for sure, redneckj may be into it.

FS/Trade, Sargent World Sport Performance seat, GenII

I bought a Sargent World Sport Performance seat for my '07 (Your basic stocker, black/black CarbonFX) last month. I had high hopes, but it doesn't improve my ergonomic situation. It's basically new (like ~500 miles), the only blemish is the tongue got a little bent (bent back OK, installs...

    Lower Leg Pain?

Yeah, I will. Let me know how the lowered pegs work? For me, lower seat position = fast pain, upper position = the slower pain. I'm pretty sure I'm riding the same pony as you, though. Arched back = reasonably comfortable wrists/hands, not = swift back pain. This is a little odd given that my...

Aftermarket extra lights - What are my options? What brand?

Forum pointer - I recently installed advmonster model 60s. I'd recommend them, but obviously another year or more of beating on them will be more useful. TL;DR: They're pretty noisy electrically, as I would expect most of the lights in the same form factor to be, fit on the FJR quite nicely...

Corbin Smuggler (Black Cherry) for sale on eBay

Not affiliated with the seller, but I know people keep looking for these used https://www.ebay.com/itm/Corbin-Smuggler-for-Yamaha-FJR1300-Gen-II-2006-2012-/230846884181?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bf8be955&vxp=mtr

KrZy8 - Mounting Soltek on lower fork tube?

I've put fork mounted lights on every bike I've owned for years. Usually cheapie wal-mart jobs, mind you. I have high hopes for LED lights on the forks lasting a little longer. Yeah, they're generally destroyed within a season. But they provide useful light from there (if not the best position)...

    Lower Leg Pain?

So I'm ~5k miles into my new '07 FJR. I've ridden for ~20 years, so I've experienced plenty of interesting kinds of discomfort. It has a custom (not for me) Rich's seat, which I'm hopefully replacing with a Sargent tomorrow. Really quite a nice seat, but I realized pretty quickly that I had to...

    Accessories

Just got back from 4.6k miles around Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Colorado/Nevada/Norcal/Central Oregon (and, btw, make time in your trip for CO-141 and NV-50 is a totally pleasant road to go across). I'm not a "real" long distance rider, but my buddy and I try to enjoy as many roads as possible on our...

    Hard downshifting?

Yup. It's not at all surprising to me that it's _clunky_ shifting at a stop, just that it actually _requires_ clutching every gear. I've had 4 different bikes in the last decade, and they'd all mostly shift through (albeit clunky).

    Hard downshifting?

I just got back from a 4800 mile ride on my new-to-me '07. Ran into an issue that I'm not sure what to make of. Shifting normally at speed, both up and downshifts are OK, if a little clunky. Yamalube oil change right before the trip. But when coming to a stop in a higher gear, it just did...

    GP Suspension bye-bye

April and the other folks at KFG worked me in right before they headed off to MotoGP, on a relatively tight schedule. Bike was there for a week, but that was largely because ( a ) I had to have them pick up due to family issues, and ( b ) was having them do general service, too. Price was fair...

    switch for driving lights

I'm sure you've come to a solution yourself, but for future readers: Trying to figure out how I want to do Aux lights myself, given a couple of constraints: ( 1 ) I want a handlebar on/off switch, and I really don't like drilling into a fairing even for dimmer ( 2 ) No significant handlebar...

Fuel Starvation 33 mi into reserve

No, not practically. This was/is an actual issue on bikes with a hard/petcock reserve, because it was switching between an upper and lower tube in the tank - so if you went many, many tanks without ever switching to reserve, it was possible that switching to reserve wouldn't help much because...

    GP Suspension bye-bye

    GP Suspension bye-bye

Just handed my FJR over to them this morning for suspension service (GP suspension front/Penske Rear), at the recommendation of some friends who have used Barry's services extensively. I'll post back if service is either outstanding or lacking.
