It is a great idea, and one I try to follow, may get around to it before my ride this weekend if I get a chance.
I've been an AMA member for 20+ yrs as I believe in their legislative work. Never had to use the tow (dang, did I just JINX myself???), but nice to know it's there.

AMA membership is not required, but it's hard to beat the bundled Roadside Assistance and other benefits (including discounts on Medical Air Evac, hotels, etc) if you are a serious LD rider.
What you may not know is that a LOT of the IBA rallies you see, including the Iron Butt Rally (aka The BIG Show) are AMA-sanctioned events. Just saying, there's much to be said about the AMA's involvement in LD riding.
This has been a fully biased opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
