What if someone really good with a GPS and a lap top(hint,hint) put on a seminar ? I see last year there was a TBS on the schedule. I'll even bring the lap top & Zumo , just need someone to teach. If tuition was Bud Light that would be fine.

I'd be happy to do a session on route building and conversions. I'm no help for anything other than Garmin units because the Zumo is my very first GPS. I have figured out how to have MS Street v2006, v2007, & v2008 all three loaded simultaneously on the same machine, and I can now do conversions from each one to GPX and GDB.

The thing to do is run it by Extrememarine to make it official. He's calling the shots and I wouldn't want to conflict with any official drinking schedules.

This is a good idea, however; I think I have beaten you to the punch! I have a route sheet made out for all riders to get to Lewisburg and have MS Street & Trips map(s) to go along with it. Though I did route most via the supper slabs, those who are coming from the south east of Lewisburg don't have a direct slab to take (you should know that). I did make the comment in my write up that the routes use the Interstates as a mean to get the riders to Lewisburg as quickly as possible, but if they so choose too, can easily jump off the slabs and take the twisty stuff into Lewisburg as they get close to Lewisburg, consulting there own map or GPS of course.

Now, I got to figure out how to get this info out to folks. Your FTP question is the way to go. Can anybody help with that this year?

And while I got your attention; do you still have the directions, maps & Garmin files from last year? Those can be used this year and we all could add to the list as well. As I recall, there were 9 rides total? I've been working on a route to get folks over to WV 16 and another route that takes folks up north to Richwood the back way on 10/39. Cool road, lots of curves but a little narrow! Been on it three times and had a blast!

mmmmm.... ask me if you can make more work for yourself? It would be cutting into your beer time.

My only concern would be that it's very hard to get a "class" kicked off after a full day of riding. The TBS clinic ended up not going last year, correct? Everyone wanted to ride (right up to right before dinner, and after!)

That being said, we do have the small conference room for Friday evening, that could easily accommodate a gathering centered around gps how-to. I could see if the hotel has a LCD projector available to use.

EDIT: or Jason could bring an LCD projector...

We did a half dozen or so TBSs last year, though I don't think it was at the originally planned time.

I'd like to sit in on a GPS clinic, but only if we can multi-task it in with a little beer drinking.

No, what I'm saying is that there are a lot of folks who struggle to make a couple days of the event, and who could benefit from knowing what good riding could be had on their way in and out of the event. Rather than guessing or finding out AFTER they arrive, thought it would be nice to give them a heads-up, that's all.

I think your idea and offer is fabulous. I just bought my ZUMO 550 and would love to be able to store all of your route planning on it. I'll be coming up the BRP from the Asheville area and have always turned west toward W VA on VA 39 near US81 and US64. It will be be nice to have some new routes to consider that have been ridden and researched.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a repository for well researched and documented gps routes here on the forum? I wonder how that could come to be? Does anyone have any thoughts?

One other thread mentioned a GPS seminar. I'll help pay for the presenter's time!! That's a great idea, too.

I think I'm good on building revised routes now. Just waiting on the full version of the new GPS conversion utility. It reads Streets&Trips files all the way through the 2008 version. Utility I have been using puked at 2007 files.

Also have ordered new Garmin 2008 maps and should have those soon. So when all the software updates arrive I'll rebuild and revise the route offerings.

Too bad Zumo and others don't support wireless networking connections. I could setup a laptop on wireless and share a folder with a collection of route files for everyone to pick up wirelessly.



Maybe the Zumo 660 will do that?

When routes & files are completed, they will be available for download via the registration site (FTP) prior to the meet.

Since we are at T - 212 DAYS UNTIL EOM, have patience. The registration site is being worked on, along with shirt design draft, and route files. We are aiming to have the website go live by June, and expect finalized route files no later than 1 September (right, Mr. Ashe?)

I was dreaming of some way to share files without swapping cards, connecting cables or any such. Wireless and shared folder would allow everyone to access files simultaneously without regard to hardware compatibility and such.

Just imagine if I could pull up beside you and Bluetooth or 802.11 wireless to your GPS, request access and you push GRANT REQUEST to allow my Zumo to suck off files, routes etc. direclty from your Zumo. Hell, I could ride for months without stopping.
