Danish police has been riding FJRs for years. They just decided to upgrade to the 2018 ES version. I find it hard to see how the ST can still be in the running here, as it hasn't been updated/manufactured since 2012'ish...I have owned and loved botht he ST1100 and ST1300, but the FJR is far better when it comes to handling and agility - which I can imagine is very important for our police force. I wouldn't hesitate at all - tons of FJRs in the police forces around the world.

Well it seems that Kim Jong Un favors the FJR as well.....

They do look sharp. That's a cool pic.

The comments here about ground clearance got me thinking. The FJR would make a great fleet bike if that's what a department chooses but it doesn't address how and where it would be used. Open roads, interstates, parades, escorts - traditional uses I think it would be a fine choice. But there's a lot of good choices out there in the ADV market also which might make more sense. Just thinking of my own area, if I were a bike cop I think I'd rather be patrolling on a V-strom or Africa Twin than an FJR. Better clearance, a more agile feel especially at lower speeds, easier to zip around side streets, parking lots, traffic, etc. And no idea where in Kentucky the OP is but, opposite of my suburban crap, might it include some rural areas where an ADV capable bike could come in handy? Right tool for the job and all that?

Without a doubt there's steep tradition in all uniformed services and motorcycle units are probably even higher up on that list. The image of a police motorcycle and rider can trace its roots way back. But there's a variety of quality bikes available now to choose from like never before which may offer more practical options.

Yeah that is a cool picture, the ground clearance isn't a issue its a small town with a 26 man PD. Thanks again everyone for your info and comments I finally got Yamaha to clarify that there has been none sold in Ky. Mostly traffic enforcement and escorts and the like. We have a new entertainment district the largest in Ky so it will be really helpful there.

I heard last week that the Lansing Mi. police are looking at these.
Met a guy who works in a multi line dealer over there and he was telling me about it.

I do like the white.

Would it be possible for civilians to buy the police version ?

It is equipped exactly the way I would like.

And I think the white would look great with some black graphics.

I don't see why not. But I bet it would cost a lot more - I expect there are provisions for powering lights, radios, sirens etc. And that gets expensive when not done in high volume. Not to mention the box on the back, crash bars etc.

With no real information except my opinion, you should be able to buy a stripped-down version of the police bike.

Email the Idaho folks and ask. Link here, in PJ4863's post. Let us know, please.

FJR1300AP are the model used by a number of Police Service/Forces in Australia. Queensland and NSW,ACT. some of the other states are looking ar the BMW R1200 I believe. They come stock with raised handlebars, blue patrol lights front and rear, patrol pod at rear, sirens, police led pole light at rear, crash bars front and rear, alternate battery under seat, wiring to back of bike to power auxiliary items such as police radio. larger side mirrors that act as wind deflectors and foot wind protectors.

Lucky for us down here you can pick a used one up from auctions and depending on which state it comes from most of the items are still there except for the blue lights, sirens and the cutting of the wires to those items.
