I got myself a tail rack (luggage rack) bolted on and this way I bungee without scuffing pretty body work.

JamesW said it right, get a tail rack and select a bag with good attachment fixtures. That will provide extra capacity and you can pull it off and into the room when on road trips.

I use a Cortech tail bag with built in Bungee cords. Works on the passenger seat or the rack.

+1. I use a Nelson Rigg the same way. Mine is actually an over-the-sissy-bar bag but I permanently attached a bungee cord through its D-rings for use on the seat or back rack. Works great as a passenger seat filler when I have the trunk on. The best price I found at the time was https://www.motorcyclegear.com/.

For solo touring I'm heading toward the "cell phone & credit card" philosophy of packing.

Last 1 week outing I had the side bags about 2/3 full and a Marsee tail bag installed with straps running under the pax seat and then cinched snug. That bag contained rain gear, light tools, tire repair kit, air pump, and water. It pretty much stays on the bike like that all the time now.

It's amazing how much stuff I used to pack that I never used.

Two up tours, well.... that's different.

I got a garauld tail rack, and this Saddlemen bag.

It has many straps that come with if for different fitments a shoulder strap, and it also has an adjustable strap to use it as a slip over the sissy bar bag. I use the two straps that go from the back to the front under the bag with lifejacket style buckles that snap together. I use it daily to pack stuff to take to work. On or off the bike in 20 seconds!

The one I have is discontinued but you can find similar. I like a bag that goes over the pillion seat. I also have a top case and could do both if I really wanted to bring a lot of gear. When riding solo with the top case, I can feel some weird wind issues at 'very' high speeds--with the bag on the back seat there are no issues with that, and you can lean back against it. It does make getting on and off the bike more of an adventure, and long legs help.

For daily riding I leave the trunk off but it sure is handy when traveling, even just overnight. But I hate the parachute feeling I get so even if it's empty I strap my bag down on the passenger seat as a filler.
