The PO removed the center stand and installed a lowering kit. I'm taking off the lowering kit, going back to the stock dog-bones, and putting the center stand back on. I can suspend the bike with an engine hoist. Is it necessary to remove the bottom of the shock in order to get the lowering kit off etc?

You just have to remove the lower shock bolt is all.
