I have A 2005 FJR1300 with an Avon Storm front tyre which has worn significantly on the right hand side only.

There is a rigid in the tyre between the left and right sides.

The diference in the step is about 2mm (0.80 inch).

Left side of the tyre is in good condition.

The rear tyre does not have the same problem.

The rear linkage was properly serviced during the 24,000 mile service.

Does anybody have any ideas, the motorcycle has completed 27,000 miles and a full service was completed at 24,000 miles.

I don't have any experience with Avon tires, but that sounds to me like your basic manufacturing defect. Looks like two halves were formed with different compounds, either they changed it and you go the luck tire, or one of them was under mixed. This assumes that they still make tires by forming each half and then attaching them.

If that's not how they are manufactured (which is kinda likely), and you don't have LOTS of right-turn riding (backwards on an oval track? :) ) it still sounds like a mfg defect. I just hope it's not too late to complain about it: you didn't say when you got the tires or how many miles were put on them.

I'm shopping for a new front myself, as I didn't realize that the front was losing air, and drove for a while on a low tire...wore two nice bald strips down, meaning I'm only gonna get a little over 5k on the factory tires, due to my own stupidity.

I have had 3 sets of Avon tires, always got good mileage out of them, first I have ever heard of this puzzling to me.

Mine was doing the same thing only on the left side. When I would let go of the handle bars I would find that I would need to shift my weight a little bit to get the bike going straight. I was thinking that that might be the problem. I just put on a new set of PR2's, so once the snow melts, I'm going to test my theory.

a puzzle, I've used Avon tires for ~ 3 yrs, now with 43,000 miles on the bike, and Avon is my preferred tire.

If this is a used M/C you've purchased (?), I'd just get a replacement tire of whichever brand you prefer so you have no concerns with your new bike.

Avons have been discussed in length on this forum. It's a love hate relationship with most forum members that have experience with them. Me personally, I loved the Avon Azaros and the Avon Storms not quite as much, but the way they handle is what I like the most. You never know what you are going to get in the long run though. One set may wear nicely, but may cause the bike to shimmy and shake on the front. The next may wear terribly uneven and not shake as much. I've had a set start cupping badly and the next set didn't. Most tires over here wear more on the left because of the crown in the center of the road. I agree with Mike. The Avons have manufacturing defects galore. Quality control is lacking. But when you get a good set (Few and far between) it's pretty good stuff.

I will never buy a front (no problem with the rear tire) Avon Storm again. :glare: Had one replaced under warranty with only 4K miles, it felt like I had a nobby on the front rim. Very uneven wear pattern...I always keep a close eye on tire pressure. The replacement tire was somewhat better but started to do the same at around 7K miles. :angry2:

I have had two front Storms replaced under warranty. Both had uneven wear on the left side and started feeling like they were seperating. I have one new one left and will probably sell it.

Azaro's were OK but the front tire cupped something terrible. The Storms were nice...great handling in the wet weather and really good durability as I got 11k on the rear before a nail ended its life prematurely. Unfortunately the front cupped as bad as the Azaro's.

The Avon tires remind me of a Chevy or Ford. Some people love them and get a ton of mileage but boy if you get a clunker forget about it.

The PR2's seems to be wearing very well. Front has 9k with no cupping and very even wear. Rear has 10k and is just now starting to square off. Only drawback has been their wet weather handling which IMO is dicey but nonetheless I have another set curing in the basement for installation in Feb.

Hi All

Problem solved!

Two new Continental Attack (Road) fitted.

I will now monitor the wear on the new tyres.

The tyre specialist stated this a common fault with front tyres on sports tourers.

The tyres had been filled with Ultra Seal the tyre specialist did like the use of this fluid.

I liked the Conti's when new, great in the rain. I got 8000 miles out of mine. Switched to the Pilot Road 2's

Could have just been a bad tire, but you might want to double check your suspension settings also. The one storm I ran wore fine, just wore out too soon for my taste. (6k) The Conti RA set I ran was a pretty good wet and dry. The front eventually cups and with those large tread blocks, makes for some pretty good shake if you take both hands off the bars in decel. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of. I got 10k from the rear and 14k from the front, but should have changed it about 12k, give or take. Handling was getting pretty bad on that last trip.

I too had a simliar problem with the original Bridgestones. The only conclusion I have come to is something was wrong with that particular tire (Not Brand). I try to make sure I always have the correct tire preasure and the dam thing wore really fast on the left side anyway.

After careful study of the problem without the help of NASA, I think the compound in the center of the tire wasn't laminated the way it should have been, causing the bike to ride heavier on one side. I asked mechanics and friends what they thought, got all kinds of answers. Since it didn't happen before or after (same Bike) I think my quess about that particular tire defect was the best answer. Just got a bad tire. After 5 or six bikes and quite a few tires I quess it can happen.

Bike road like shit and was getting worse, front tire didn't make it 3000K. New tires....bike is like new, actually better.

Ah fer chisakes!

Ion most likely provided the answer... Roads are "crowned" we hit the right side here in the "STATES" therefore the left side takes the substantially large share of the "abuse"

You fellas " across the pond" are back asswards.. resulting in the opposite side tyre wear..

Gimps!
