Tank will not align after lifting it.

Hey guys.

2008 model...just did the throttle spring adjustment but it looks like I may have lifted the tank up a bit too high.

When I drop it back down it's at least 1/2" back from where it should be the holes don't even line up for those two

screws up top. Something must be bent perhaps from lifting it up too high. Any ideas on how I can resolve this ?

Be sure you've loosened the bolt it pivots on at the back. Don't remove it, just loosen it to free up the lifting. You can probably then just grab the tank at the bottom of the back end and push it forwards.

As far as how high to lift it, you can easily raise it to 45 degrees or so without interference from anything. That's about the reach of the electrical connections underneath.

 
I use a block of wood for leverage at the bottom of the tank to get the top holes to line back up. Worked on my 2004 and my buddies 2008.

You should be able to easily move it by hand once the rear pivot bolt is loosened, and less fuel in the tank is better for doing this. At least my Gen1 is real easy. ;)

Yep!!!

A couple of owners have pried on their tanks and "forced" things out of shape. IIRC, at least one owner gave his a big "WHOMP" and dented the tank in the back.

I suppose he can claim it is for clearance for his "personal comfort".... :dribble:

 
That kind of thing has happened to me (not on the FJR) as well on more than one bike. I'm not sure of the configuration of the front attachment of the FJR but make sure you have the front of the tank "fully engaged". I'm certain that's all it is

Oh boy I Did not loosen that pivot now what.

 
When that bolt is loose (it's just a long bolt all the way through, with a nut on one side) the tank gets a lot of free play. Just shove it forward when the bolt is loose. Grab it at the bottom rear.

 
So as most recommended I loosened the pivots and she moved right up into position. Thanks all for the replies.

 
Wiggle it a bit-I give it a good whack forward with the palm of my hand. It will go one way or 'tother.

 
OK. My Gen1 steps.

1) Remove rider seat.

2) Remove black side panels on both sides of the bike (between tank, frame and seat, YMMV with the Gen2, maybe silver). NOTE: For Gen1's, unless you're lifting the tank up, the side panels can stay in place as you can access the pivot bolt with just the seat off.

3) Loosen both bolts at the front of the tank and steering head area or remove if you want to lift the tank up higher.

4) Loosen rear pivot bolt, do NOT remove.

5) Now either shimmy or lift the tank up a bit and push forward to where you want it, the middle of the hole is a good spot.

6) Now thread in and snug the two upper bolts at the front of the tank.

7) Tighten rear pivot bolt.

8) Tighten two front bolts of tank.

9) Check all fasteners that they are secure.

10) Reverse assembly on the rest.

11) Recheck everything again.

12) Go riding.

Just replaced the plugs and adjusted the throttle bodies a couple weeks ago on my '08 and my tank slide rearward a little also. Don't bang on your tank. Just push the back of the tank forward using your thumb, while using your other hand to wiggle the front back and forth. It should slide right back into place.

Although the '08 is a little different from what the instructions mentioned, using a block of wood to hold the tank up and thin wire to keep from losing the retaining clips that hold the rubber caps on the throttle bodies sure make this job a piece of cake.

Life saver! I already ran out of ideas and was going to do something terribly stupid:)
