I try to use the hand shifter exclusively, and use it to get the bike in Neutral before I start the bike. That way I am guaranteed that the hand shifter is engaged.

This is my first "new" bike and I'm thinking I should bring it in at 600 miles for them to check everything out and adjust things that settled in the first 600 miles. Do they just change the oil and filters, and that's it?

Do you feel the frame sliders reduced the damage? I just purchased some but haven't received them yet. That was only thing that made me consider the ST1300--built-in "drop" protection.

Same here. I like using just my index finger since my thumb is sometimes busy with other things (lights, turn signals, etc.) My left fingers are used to moving around when I shift gears anyway so it's not like they are taking on extra work.

It is important that you do both at the same time. I tried to just do one side first, but they are linked underneath and can't be adjusted separately.

I try to do it the "traditional" way, and it is difficult. I have seen comments like "put a GL1800 on a centerstand and you'll find out how easy the FJR is", but the GL1800 has a reverse gear that makes centerstanding easy.

It took about 1/2 a tank of gas to get used to it. Actually, yesterday, I finally surpassed my clutch skills with the AE. I found a "magic" acceleration rate that made an extremely smooth ride when shifted just right with a little reverse throttle blip. I'm still on my first tank of gas.
