Test rode 2014 RT - nice, but.....

I've been off Forum for some time, but check in periodically to read the mail. I'm on a '14 HD Road King now (#48 in 54 years) due to arthritis (need lazy boy posture and simplicity). I've had three FJR's but haven't ridden the current '14 FJR model. In the last few years I've owned: Several...

    So I replaced my FJR

The Victory Vision is a great motorcycle...but was too heavy for me two-up. After owning among others recently a few FJR's, Stratoliners, Raider, C109, HD Ultra Classic, and ST 1300 (33 bike total in 50 years), I owned one briefly this Fall. It did well with the rear trunk (50#) removed and was...

    Fluctuating Idle

Let us know if the synch helps when you have it done. I'd also guess that being an '09 it's quite lean at idle, and a richer idle mixture may help. It did for me on my '08. Just ignore the seemingly rude comments we all make at times for some reason or another. Too much coffee, spouse on a...

Windshield Choices - Need Advice !!

There are many opinions regarding windshields, I guess they vary with the rider's needs and height (I'm 5'9" and shrinking with age). I've used many over the years on different bikes. The V-Stream for me is the best so far of several (Calsci, Cee Bailey, stock and large Yamaha, and Rifle with...

    Exhaust Comparison

Good news and just checking on your progress! I'm a supporter and am looking forward to the tests - hope all goes well. Back to the thread. Had Staintunes on my last FJR and loved them. Will stick to stock until my money tree grows some more "leaves". Too many demands right now. Gary in Fairbanks

    Exhaust Comparison

Hello UP - did you ever Dyno your bike, or compare it with a stock ride? I sent $20 towards your effort - just checking my friend. Gary in Fairbanks

    2007 rough, slow cold idle

Good deal, now we're getting somewhere on how the cold-start setup works - the SM doesn't address it as far as I can tell. I'm riding today, but I need to raise my tank soon on my '08 and look at the setup again, and do the initial TBS. It's been a few years since I did my last TBS on the former...

    2007 rough, slow cold idle

It sounds like your cold-start air bypass system isn't working. Look on the lower left of each throttle body and you will see individual air-bypass valves that are pulled open by a common sliding rail just below the throttle bodies when the bike is first started. How that is enabled will be...

    Fluctuating Idle

If the idle still "hunts" after setting the idle speed to 1100, recheck the TB synch, and if desired, do the Barbarian CO Mod described elsewhere in the Forum. I added +4 units to my '08 idle CO settings (was +10, now +14) for all cylinders, and others have added more. I find that it idles very...

    Handlebar vibration inconsistent?

Some thoughts on vibration. I'd try the following just to eliminate potential sources. Torque the engine mounts, steering bearings, and any major frame bolts. Do the throttle plate synch mentioned, and confirm the balance by driving the bike with the manometer still attached at the speeds you...

    Stripped Oil Pan

Here's maybe a helpful suggestion, but I install my drain plugs (rear end and oil pan) with a new copper or aluminum gaskets to no more than 17 ft/lbs. Copper gaskets are available cheap at most auto parts stores (14mm bolt for both holes), and are reusable for awhile. The 35 ft/lbs for the oil...

    Clunking When First Starting

Try this if the sound persists. Start the bike cold. Go the rear of the bike and put your hands close to the exhaust outlets and see if the "clunking sound" corresponds to pressure changes from the exhaust outlets. A brief Clunk = momentary less exhaust flow on mine. Don't cook your hands as...

    Dirty Throttle Bodies

Dirt = better filter, Carbon = normal backflow. Maybe we could gen up a pool, winner gets a treat. Damned if I know where it's coming from. I gave it my best guess above for the fun of it. What exhaust system do you have, and is your exhaust air induction system still connected? How do the...

    Dirty Throttle Bodies

Does make perfect sense to me Fred that the deposits could be comprised of some carbon. Any reverse flow would be more apt to exit the throttle plate backwards in the area of lowest intake flow = the dirty bottom, and be deposited there on oily residue. That's only my speculation of course...

    Dirty Throttle Bodies

Some of the "dirt" may actually be carbon from the cylinder blown back as your mechanic described. The exhaust system can, under certain conditions and design, flow a reverse pressure wave that inhibits filling of the cylinder on the intake stroke during valve overlap at TDC between the exhaust...

    Clutch Gone 13,400 miles

You're right of course - why worry just fix now. The only problem I really see, besides continuing poor clutch operation, is contaminating the engine's innards with dry clutch fibers. Yamaha recommended Fubar disassemble and clean the engine after his clutch failure. That's not on my fun fix and...

    Clutch Gone 13,400 miles

I seriously thought about it, but was in somewhat of a hurry to get the deal back together. It would take removing the inner clutch boss P/N 3P6-16371-00-00 (see) which contacts the inner teeth of the metal non-fibered clutch plates. The boss then connects the engine power from the engine-driven...

    Yamaha's Woes

My local Dealer told me today he was still waiting for his '09 A - ordered last Fall for Spring delivery. Not yet available or released. Thank goodness he found me an '08A in March or I'd still be wanking. Gary in Fairbanks

    TBS

Good deal, and I'm sure it'll help smooth things out. I bought a Morgan unit almost four years ago, and have really enjoyed using it on the bikes I've owned since. I've done the full synch (TB idle and shaft screws) on three FJR's and three cruisers, and find it can help smooth out the engine...

    Dirty Throttle Bodies

One air filter test. Others can be found by Google. I've used both Factory and K&N as have many. I like the K&N's performance on my old airplane which is worth about 75-100 RPM static increase (only maybe 95 HP), but it will pass more dirt. I'd be tempted to use a Uni-Filter next time around on...
