VStream Touring Windscreen in summer

So, here's a somewhat weird question: I have the mid-sized VStream Touring screen, which I absolutely love. However, now that it is starting to get swampy hot here in Virginia, I am tempted to put the stock screen back on just to get some better airflow. Does anyone else do this kind of thing, or am I nuts?

Lots of people (especially in the north) have a shorter summer shield that is on the bike from June to September and a cool weather barn door for the rest of the time.

Mine latest had the OEM touring screen on it when I got it. As the previous reply-it lives on the bike in the summer & the VStream fall-winter-spring. I am pretty tall/skinny and feel the touring screen coverage is similar to the standard to somebody more standard sized.

Not a weird question at all...it's all weather dependent! I have the same VStream sport-touring shield on my '15 that I run year around. Love the coverage in the PNWet. Running it fully down works fine for me in hotter weather, but in the west, we don't typically have humidity to deal with.

Easy swap, if want the short stock shield, go for it!

Thank you, you reminded me it's time to change over to my stock screen for the summer. I do have an X-creen that I switch as well, so even in the summer I can put it up and be better protected from the elements.

The other day, I suddenly realized my gas mileage had gone up 2-3 mpg. Then I realized I am riding with my barn door V-stream DOWN instead of UP. So I can't wait to put the stock sheild on and get another mile or two a gallon. {I know, I am wierd, but I get such a charge out of getting more than 40 miles per gallon, and it's probably kept me from a dozen tickets, keeping it under 90 so I can get that 40 MPG|

P. S. several of you are itching to tell me how you get 45-50 mpg with your FJR, here's a hint. KEEP THAT TO YOURSELF!!

Good to know I'm not out of my mind! I think I will switch back to the stock screen and see if a) it helps with the heat and, B) I can stand the buffeting. "B" is partly why I switched to the VStream in the first place. I bought the bike in December last year, so this is my first summer with the FJR and I'm finding that it can get pretty warm on the road...

I fiddle frequently. Not all the time. I can't tolerate the stock screen. It just gives me no protection. For around the block, it's great. For distance, it's a no-go. But I still swap it on every once in a while. I run a cee bailey largest in the winter. I run a Yamaha touring or vstream 20308 (medium) in the summer. The tiny stock screen wouldn't be too bad in slow traffic in the afternoon heat, but the roar at speed in the morning is just crazy.

I do okay heat wise with the 20308 or touring screen all the way down. In any traffic slow enough to tolerate the stock, I'd probably be hot anyway. You're not crazy to experiment, you're smart. Swapping screens only takes me about 2 minutes.

My main battle is noise. And ventilation. I've recently switched to my Cee Bailey reverse flip (maybe a +4). It's pretty good, but I still get helmet buffeting and not enough airflow unless down, which negates a lot of its benefit. I have a VStream that was fine in colder weather but probably won't see the bike again this summer. I also have a Yamaha Touring screen that I've mounted a Gold Wing vent in and I may put that back on this weekend. I have't used in a while. I do have a the little Vario thingy that I can attach as well. The stock screen is a no-go, period. I may try a Laminar Lip on the touring screen at some point, but I hate the look of it. I know, form vs. function, but I bought the bike for how it looks as well as how it rides.

As a side note, the screens do have an effect on mpg. Going from the VStream to the Cee Bailey has added 2-3mpg. I remember when I originally got the bike, I picked up a much larger Cee Bailey that I no longer have. It was a 5-6mpg penalty. A lot of my riding is highway, so the added resistance at speed makes a difference.

I just leave my Vstream on and crank it down a little. I don't like wind buffeting at all and if it gets to hot to ride, I don't ride. Life's too short to force myself to ride when I don't like the temperature.

Distance riding with the stock screen is my biggest concern. I bought the VStream because I felt that the wind buffeting at speed was too much, but it was late fall/early winter. With the VStream, I was able to ride most of the winter, as long as I waited until noonish to start (40 degrees F is my lower comfort limit).

I'll try the stock screen on a hot day and see how it feels. It may not make enough of a difference and I'll pop the VStream back on and forget about it.

I also have the mid-size Vstream and I've come to just leave it on year-round. The only seasonal change to the bike is the mounting/removal of the bark-buster grip shields. I do change what I wear in different seasons, though.

The weather here in the Pacific Northwet is getting to the point where I'll be taking the V-Stream off and putting the stocker on for the summer pretty soon.

I like the OEM for summer. Took off the V stream, which I believe is a medium. I will put it back on for winter riding, as long as the snow is not flying.

I have messed around with the windscreen since I purchased my bike. Didn't like the stock one since it's tiny and my first purchase was the NC 20309 which is the barn door version. Loved it for winter riding in Texas but in summer it sucked. Sold it and bought the Yamaha touring screen and think it's the perfect size except for summer in Texas. I ended up putting the OE screen on for summer for the increased airflow even at the expense of more noise and buffeting.

something else you can do is tilt the screen back, makes the top lower and unless you raise it all the way up now, with the tilt, if you need full protection you can still have it.

Or find you a V-Stream Sport Shield

any information on laying the screen back ?? i'm looking for more air on me with the stock screen

debating the V sport, but not sure about the dark, or if its any better, calmer, more air than strock.

That's exactly what I've done. I prefer the wind to the heat, but that;'s just me.

I cut my spacers out of 3/8 air hose.

I used spacers to angle back my stock shield and it reduced buffeting and wind noise considerably. I highly recommend trying it. It is cheap and easy to do and if it doesn’t work for you you are only out a couple of bucks for the spacers.
