2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Final outcome: The shop bled the system and I've got a functional motorcycle again. After seeing the nasty work necessary to remove the swingarm for the book process and realizing I really had to start packing to leave the country for nine days instead of wasting more time on the motorcycle, I...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

You, sir, are my hero. Should you ever find yourself in Colorado, you are entitled to many beers at my expense.

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Alrighty. I pulled it back apart and put it back together, paying nice. close attention to the rings at the rear of the assembly. Everything's nice and snug with no play. It's better - I can now do the turn-the-key-off-and-on-real-fast trick to get it to come up without SH_26 most of the time...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

That was actually the photo walkthrough that I used - I found the photo slideshow, but not the page you linked up. I guess it's back in to pull it all apart, then. Though: does anybody have a good picture of that manual actuator bolt's location? It would be nice to get it PROPERLY bled...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

15000-ish. I just did the valve check and air filter (placement of which I want to discuss with some Yamaha engineer) a few months ago. I figure it's got to be something obvious - the clutch soak is common enough and simple enough that there's only so much I can have done wrong.

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Additional: in 1st gear on the center stand, the rear wheel rotates a bit and then catches, but continues to spin against some resistance. The shift light/SH_26 code now only comes on when I pull in the brake lever after the key's turned on. I saw in another SH_26 post that somebody'd found an...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Well, I gave it all a soak today for about 8 hours. Everything's nice and oily. I put it all back together, torqued it all down, turned the key, and.... SH_26. The forum suggests a clutch bleed for that code, but I don't recall seeing anyone reporting an error code after a clutch soak. While...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

That's one of the things I've been wondering about with this - it doesn't matter if I'm babying it or playing for pinks with some twerps in Daddy's new Mustang; it does it regardless.

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Ya know, I *tried* to find something like those threads and could not find the magic set of search terms. I sure as hell like "overnight clutch soak" a LOT better than "$2000 in labor to open up the transmission". And, of course, my YES warranty DID expire last month. The dealer here...

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

This thread from 2006 kind of sounds close. And I do believe my YES warranty expired earlier in the year. I'm probably going to be kicking myself for not having brought it in the first time it did it, aren't i.

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Hm. That's mechanical, so I'd think to expect more repeatability out of it. On the idea that it might be, though, how painful is it to do a transmission teardown on the FJR to diagnose it?

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Kind of. Hard to tell in traffic with a helmet on. My initial thought was "WTF? Have I broken a motor mount?", but that isn't it.

2006 AE: serious, repeated "THUNK" when getting underway

Since I have to take the bike in for the grounding recall anyway, I figure I might as well try and solve the last problem I've got with it at the same time. Periodically, my 2006 AE will make a repeated "THUNK" feeling when starting from a dead stop. This isn't the usual "THUNK" of going...

    Fieldsheer riding gear?

I've had two FS jackets. The sizing chart is technically accurate, but I found that FS's alpha sizing (L, XL, M, etc.) bears no resemblance to anything else. In normal shirts, jackets, and everything else, I'm an "XL". To Fieldsheer, who apparently uses malnourished midgets as their clothes...

Clutch Bleed Time - Can it be done with.....

I haven't fitted speedbleeders on my AE, but I picked up a MityVac at Harbor Freight (the only "name brand" product I have /ever/ seen there...) for $30 or so and it seemed to get the system flushed after some patience.

    Starcom1 Digital and wireless Headset

Not true. WebBikeWorld reviewed a ton of Bluetooth comm systems earlier this year and several of them do A2DP - Chatterbox XBi, for instance. I really want to pick one up if I can figure out a good way to get the in-ear buds that I already own to fit into the system.

    FJR LED Tail lights

Depends on the product. Depends on exactly who it's marketed at. If it's marketed at the sportbike crowd, it's probably useless for actual, um, use. See: smoke/blackout lens packages, undertail-delete kits, "integrated" brake/turn elements, flush-mount turn signals., etc. Kind of like all...

Harley-Davidson is going to discontinue Buell M/C line

That's a bummer. It's sad that (from Erik's video) it doesn't appear that Buell's going to resurface as a private company. The poor guy looks like he's had his entire reason to exist taken away and shot in front of him. I test-rode two Buells - an XB12S and an 1125R - and for the short time I...

    GPS route planning help

I would pay serious money if Garmin would drop MapSource altogether and figure out how to let me do my route planning in Google Maps/Earth instead. My personal gripe-fest includes: * moving a route never seems to be intuitive no matter how often I use the program * annoying habit of putting a...

Wireless access point in my front yard

I live across the street from a large apartment complex. I would certainly never ever ever ok I'm lying log into somebody's router and change the settings to work in a more optimal fashion. I swear - two years ago every router on my side of that complex was on the default Channel 6 (and the...
