Monday, October 2nd

A three state day on some great roads through KY, TN, and NC... the weather gods are looking out for us so far... staying at a lovely motel in Maggie Valley tonight... tomorrow I head out on my own and will miss my riding companions these past two days... has been a joy!!I

Foggy morning at the lake…

Heading out from Buckhorn Lake Resort…

A stop at the Bean Station overlook to enjoy the view…

Cool bridge…

Here we come NC… notify the authorities!!

NC-209 was a favorite…

We done wore Marie out!!

We stayed at the charming Cardinal Inn in Maggie Valley… two sisters run the place and were very welcoming and the area around the motel is really wonderful to walk around…

There’s a huge tree that they have named Jack… he seemed surprised to see us…

Ma and Pa Kettle on the front porch…

Walked to a nearby restaurant for dinner and then back to the motel for some relaxed chatter and enjoying the evening… it was a good day!!

Tuesday, October 3rd

Broke bread with Rob and Marie this morning and had a tearful goodbye before I headed out on my own but they were good tears at the joy of time spent together.

Many times when out on my own I feel humbled at the gifts that are presented to me along the way. Today was no different... I was treated to a dazzling array of sights and some incredible roads... NC209, NC208, NC226A (aka The Diamondback), 181, and 194... it filled my heart amidst the sadness for current events and for that I was grateful. Love to all!!

Beautiful morning on NC209… thanks to Mark/WheatonFJR for the suggestion!

Roads like this… All. Day. Long

Came around a bend and there was a huge field of zinnias that I turned back to snap a pic of… evidently, there are folks who seed wildflowers out in the middle of nowhere for travelers to stumble across when they venture to out of the way places and roads…

Clouds and sun made for a good pairing…

Waterfalls tucked away off the side of the road… almost missed them!

Heading to Little Switzerland through the tunnel…

Deerlick Gap Overlook…

Had lunch at the Little Switzerland Cafe which was yummy… then on to ride 226A, aka the Diamondback!

Fish Hatchery Rd which connects up between 126 and 181 near Lake James State Park…

So much to see and just right off the side of the road!

Arrived in Mountain City and to my digs for the evening, Prospect Hill, a lovely B&B in a home that’s been around since 1889 and is well preserved and rooms updated and beautifully decorated…

No restaurants nearby so Subway to the rescue... sat in the upper alcove of the house to enjoy my supper…

Comfy bed, sound of crickets outside the window, and peace and quiet resulted in a wonderful night’s sleep…

Wednesday, October 4th

Holy smokes what a day! Lovely breakfast at my B&B and chit chat with the owner and host, Donna…

Then headed out via 91…

Then 610 which runs through farm country after a little detour…

Until coming out on 16 and traversing the back of the dragon…

Met up with Jim/spklbuk in Tazewell and had a delicious bbq lunch before he proceeded to take me on a Mr Toads Wild Ride through the West Virginia back roads… I asked him to put together a Google map because I had no idea where I had been! lol

https://goo.gl/maps/F7LuoxPndSr

Traveling through coal camp towns…

Peeking through the tunnel…

16, 161, WhereTheHellAreWe Rd - a dead end road that we had to turn around and ride the "wrong" road again... oh darn!

Jim was out of his gourd…
20171004_150838-1507311823090-X2.jpg

Proof that some men actually DO ask for directions…

We did have to dodge a killer chihuahua that came shooting out of its front yard like it had a rocket up its butt to try and get those evil motorcycles… Jim didn’t see it the first time but when we hit the dead end and had to turn around, he definitely saw that little mofo!

10, 19, SomeRoadThatJimTurnedOn, 20…

OneLaneRoadThatEndedInMatakoa,

Past Bluestone Lake and dam as the sun started setting…

And finally to Jim and Creta's house for a wonderful dinner and chit chat... wondering what adventures are in store for tomorrow!!

Thursday, Oct. 5th

Yesterday was another wonderful day following Jim around... a bit more relaxed and what he called a Picture Postcard tour and it was aptly named... so many amazing roads and incredible scenery... it never seems to end!

Route: https://goo.gl/maps/jR8phKVN2NM2

Jim and Creta’s backyard… nice to wake up to a beautiful country morning!

Humpback Bridge…

Falling Spring Falls…

Jefferson Pools Hot Springs… will have to check that place out in person next time!

Dan Ingalls Overlook…

Nice view!

Shenandoah Valley…

Grist Mill…

Jim, ever the Southern gentleman, escorted me to the Royal Oaks Resort cabins where I would be staying that evening before heading back home... even carried in my bags! Lydia will join me today and we will continue on tomorrow for more adventures…

Nice sunset to end the day…

Friday, Oct. 6th

Friday was a quiet day and I relaxed and visited Sherando Lake while waiting for Lydia to arrive which she did after a little hit and miss finding the place… I had picked up some Panera Bread for dinner that evening… we supped and then got a good night’s rest in preparation for the next day’s adventures!!

Pretty church on the grounds…

And the other end of the spectrum of life…

Nighty night…

All that looks lovely. You are gonna be disappointed as hell when you see the accommodations, the views, the roads and the food in Swampy Flatlandistan.

Saturday Oct. 7th

Saturday we rode some of the Blue Ridge Pkwy… it was a beautiful start to the day…

I didn't take a lot of pics since I had just been up this way before EOM but Lydia was enjoying her first tryst along the BRP…

And then traversed 221 with lots of lovely sweepers through the countryside…

Even dilapidated buildings still retain some beauty…

And then another bit of the BRP near Boone…

Friends sharing a moment and making a memory to treasure…

Before finally arriving at Blowing Rocks, NC, after scoring a room via a last minute cancellation... really cute place…. nice dinner, some route planning and weather channel watching, and then to bed...

hey, very nice RR. Very thanks to take the time to share all this pictur!

Sunday, Oct. 8th

Had to make a detour due to weather issues from Nate and jetted to Savannah... very foggy leaving Blowing Rocks that morning coupled with road work made for slow going down the mountain...

Then a very warm and humid slab day... will visit friends tomorrow in Beaufort and then head back for the hills on Tuesday once the weather settles down… great hotel right on the riverfront... this cargo ship took up almost the entire waterway!

Today was about 300 miles to Dillard, GA, in humid sauna weather winding our way through cotton fields, farmland, and forests... not a challenging ride but definitely better than slabbing it the whole way... we should be well detoxed by now with all the "glowing" we did!!

Wow.

Wonderful.

Wheee.

Whoa.

Whoopee.

WooHoo.

Weather: Beautiful
Roads: Empty
Scenery: Stupendous

A ridiculously beautiful day... started out on a little loop that Uncle Hud had recommended - Betty's Creek and Mulberry Rd - and it was a very good recommendation and on top of that it was a gorgeous morning... winning!

Made our way into Gatlinburg via Pigeon Fort which is... well, interesting... it's like the place where all the fun houses and weird carnival rides go to die... Gatlinburg itself was pretty busy but we found a decent hotel on the river...
20171011_185318-X2.jpg

And took advantage of the town trolley to get to dinner...
20171011_185412-X2.jpg

Great recommendation for dinner from our hotel concierge and repentance right across the street...

Tomorrow we head for more visual glee via the Smokey Mountains and Cherohala Pkwy... feeling pretty blessed as I fall asleep with the sound of the river outside our window...
