Been using a K & N filter on my bike for the past 210K miles (the same filter) and there seems to be no ill effects. But I was planning on doing a compression test at my next oil change (oil will be sent into a lab for analysis) just to satisfy my curiousity as to the health of the motor. If the filter were passing too much dirt through, would this be evident in low compression? I would imagine the particulates would be abrasive to the cylinder walls as well as to the piston rings.

Is very difficult to measure damage done by poor air filtration by the seat of one's pants or anecdotal comments, "Mine lasted 210,000 miles with no ill effects!"

Professionals use Used Oil Analysis to detect silicon content, which has practically no other way of finding its way into your oil. Also expect increased levels of ferrous material and aluminum in the oil.
