can engine trouble be diagnosed by exhaust sound?

during todays sofla ride, i listened to my bikes sound, side-by-side with a similar bike.

mine is an 2006 w/24,000 miles

taterides is 2006 w/7,000 miles

compared, my engine/exhaust sounded deeper and had more of a growl...

i am NOT interested in the testosterone of exhaust notes...

butt, i am wondering if side-by-side comparisons are a valid way to note changes?

anybody with experience to say if this symptom, combined with x, y, or z, would warrant looking for certain issues?

idle speed smooth, changed plugs at 12,000 miles with the ngk's that 'should last 16,000 miles', regular maintaince done... tbs 6,000 miles ago...

I think the difference is that your bike had a lot of dirt on it, and his was clean as a whistle.

Yep, that's the reason.
