since am kinda a big teche and can't leave well enough i also go a few mods done too

oh ya it also Over clocked to the moon

My POS Asus unit has been running 24x7 since 2005...

I should have rebuilt new, but with this track record of up time, just couldn't..

kinda like SkooterG running the DOW into the ground..

why i picked AMD? cost. the Intel i7 equivalent is about 1K for the CPU vs AMD's 269 and most higher end intel based mother boards are $100 on top. less than 7% performance differences between AMD and Intel (not counting AES encryption, intel is better for it since they built it)

I just finished a 1K build.

Core i7 3.06/GTX-460/8Gig DDR3 1600/Intel 120Gig Solid State HD/WD 1TB/Corsair Pro 750W PS /Asus 23inch lcd/Windows 7 Home Premium

Reused a Thermal Take Mid Tower Case

Not part of the build cost..

Added a Linksys E3000 Dualband router (running DD-WRT), added a WD 2 TB External 3.0 USB for media.

Next I'll be converting my Buffalo N Router into a Bridge Repeater at the other end of the house.

I like your build better, but cutting edge is so damn pricey. I'm not gaming so I'll keep her running cool.

Do a dual boot to PClinuxOS 2010 (The full monty's nice) as long as Windoze 7 isn't a anti dual boot Nazi.

Then run the Chromium browser on your neenernet connection, bet it's impressive on that box!

I recently upgraded MB, memory, processor, and video card.

I've always used Intel, but this time switched to AMD.

I got a AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition, and was able to go in unlock the other 2 cores, and end up with an

X4. I mildly overclocked it to 3200MHz. Only cost about $100. More bang for the buck than Intel.

Had built a core two quad a few years back when i came home to a fried motherboard, cpu, and power supply. At the time i was very frustrated that it had happened for no apparent reason (no storms, etc. while i was out of town). I rebuilt to the core two quad, 4Gb of Corsair memory, 1k power supply, nVidia card that was da shiznit at the time, and it ran XP for a few years until i recently upgraded to Win7.

When i recently came home to a powered-down system and turned on my computer i was greeted by a Windows 7 Unable to Load error. I threw my hands up at the idea of Windows crashing while the system was off as i let SpinRite run for 78 hours without finding a problem with the hard drive. I then slaved it to another machine, backed up the data, and reinstalled Win7 from scratch (and still no hdd failures).

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... i fired up the plastic and the phone lines so that a week later my 27" i5 iMac as well as 3rd party +4Gb of RAM was here. It fired up, installed, discovered my network, a couple of clicks later and i was into my e-mail, had VMWare's Fusion 3 installed and Win7 running in sandbox mode and haven't looked back. For my Xmas present, my Son-In-Law's sister bought me Photoshop Deluxe for the Mac.

So i'm pleased as punch about the new system. I also encourage everyone to keep using WinTel so that my 35+ year career in computer support can continue long enough for me to retire.

I went Mac about 3 years ago now, and won't ever go back. The only thing I really use Parallels/Win XP for anymore is CAD and some control software that aren't available in Mac world (yet).

Per zorlac am going to try out PClinuxOS 2010 KDE, if duel boot on the same HDD is an issue i'll just add a 500Mb HDD and have the BIOS set the boot

The nice thing about Linux is the live CD, try it out without risk, if it finds all your hardware to your satisfaction & you like it, just install it.

I run GParted from the live CD & partition the HD first, it works much better than the installer, plus you can resize the winders partion, reboot & let winders get comfortable with the new size before installing Linux. (tip: a 1GB Linux swap partition is PLENTY /root part ~60% & /home part ~40% JMO)

A disk image to an external USB drive BEFORE dikkin around can minimize wailing & gnashing of teeth if something goes awry.

My wife uses PCLinuxOS exclusively now, she's really sold on it even though her laptop dual boots to windows too.

The forum is pretty helpful too, Texstar is the main guru.

I would think the Grub boot loader would be able to do all the OS boots that the $100 USB gizmo says it can do.

Being able to boot multiple OS's is a beautiful thing, it's like owning multiple bikes. :yahoo:

I really think you'll like the speed, especially on that whizbang box!
