I would be a lot more convinced if both batteries were the same make. Apple to orange comparisons make me nervous.

Well, color me convinced! I just tried it with the dead batteries I just pulled out of a flash, and compared with the new ones I just inserted. New ones thud and stop, old ones bounce. Same brand, from the same package, even.
