How about Mammoth Lakes? Still near all the mountain passes, could make a run to Death Valley if someone wanted to, could ride into the Nevada desert, mountain biking and hiking galore if anyone wants, lots of hotels, restaurants, golf courses, etc..... Just a thought (and maybe a bad one)
Passes might still WILL be iffy that early in May...
Fixed it for you. That early in May is almost never a "go" for the top of Sonora, Tioga or even Ebbetts passes. With the snow pack we have already, especially above 8,000 feet, they are almost guaranteed to be closed then, even if we don't get any more snow for the rest of the season.

Besides, Mammoth Lakes has the same disqualifier noted here:

Rich heres a little clue for you.....Tahoe = elevation = not gonna happen.........for me anyway.

How about San Diego? We got casinos and twisty roads? Palomar Pachenga in Temecula would make a great base in May. Still cool here.
+1.....to name a few...... I don't think staying at a casino should be that important and they will be $$$. There's lots of hotels (duh...San Diego?) which are reasonably priced and a quick taxi to and from any gaming you might want to leave your money with.

The backcountry roads are awesome but there's lots to do aside from riding... world famous SD Zoo (a must see), Seaworld, Padres Ballpark aka nightgame, pie in Julian, beer and lobster south of the border, surfing, fishing, take in Oceanbeach ( a true, unspolied 60's beachtown), etc......

And of course most importantly, some great hosts that live here in the south end of SoCal.... including Me, Johnny80, DJBill, Fairlaner, Jorstin, Lanny, Bootsie, NeilSD, Pegscraper, MsNascar and too many more to name.

VOTE for San Diego

I vote Santa Barbara. Will start stashing pennies in the travel jar. I haven't been there since I left Simi Valley in 1977.

Well Roy Boy, you were on a hot and smoking roll and I did vote for San Diego: Then you went out on a limb and wrote this "Kiss of Death" paragraph! What in the Hell were you thinking, Hombre?

Thoughts.

If Santa Barbara is the venue, Carpinteria State Beach is a very groovy place to camp. Right on the beach with great sunsets.

Walk to restaurants and bars. Recommended by TwoWheelNut.

Jus' sayin'.

I could vote for Carpinteria, I used to keep a travel trailer at Carpinteria State Beach when I was a Field Pipefitter still working with the tools in Ventura and Santa Barbara. Then the company promoted me to the office and I became totally worthless, as my Fitters would always tell me. Those Bastards!

Spent a week camping at Carpinteria State Beach for many summers as a kid. That'd bring back some serious memories IF I could make it (and the Gathering was to be there). But I think I'm going to be riding elsewhere in the country during the suggested time in May.
