How to convince the Wife to ride..........

Here is my two cents worth. Get a baby sitter and take her on a date. Find a nice restaurant 45 or 60 minutes out, mix in a wine tour or something like that and a nice smooth ride back. (Don’t forget to bring something to wrap the bottles in so they don’t break.)

Well, I did a Fall color drive one day, and a Fall color ride the next.

Day one with her was great.

Day 2 on the bike was great. I've kind of learned to adapt to the non-riding wife, and in turn, I get the seat time I need.

That's Exactly what happened. We Tortured the Poor Guy for Months. It eventually Stopped Working and he took it off the bike and threw it Away!

Get a baby sitter and take her on a date? There are a lot of very understanding wives out there, but I don't know of many who will tolerate their husband taking the babysitter on a date like that, especially with wine involved. If you can do it, more power to ya! It's probably worth the extra effort to insist that the babysitter be at least 18. A lot of the 15-17 year olds may look hot and ready to go, but they probably aren't worth the potential trouble.

Regarding the rest of the thread, I'm aware that some folks say they enjoy having a passenger on the bike with them, but my perspective is that if your SO doesn't want to ride with you, consider yourself lucky. Riding a motorcycle is an activity best done solo. On the rare occasion when I haul a passenger, it's because THEY wanted to go, not because I wanted them to go.

When I met the Spouse Unit, she was terrified of motorcycles. Went for one ride with me on the FJR.

Now she likes a short hop on the FJR from time to time... but rides her Speed Four if we go on a trip.

Aerodynamics are better on an fjr than the harley type bikes. Combined braking with ABS is far better than no ABS and no combined braking, making the fjr or similiar bike much safer. Smooth inline powerful 4 cylinder. Hands down this is my favorite long haul bike over my two others, 1300 v-star yamaha and m50 suzuki, both v-twins, harley types.

My only advise would be to get a passenger backrest or the topcase. Many women (including my wife) hate to ride on the back of a bike without that backrest. They feel like they can slide off the back or side because there is nothing to give them front/back or side to side support. I got the backrest from pirates lair ($350). Pricy, great quality and comfortable and easily detachable when not needed. Wife loves it and she actually likes the hand grips for the passenger on the bike. Your sweetie will probably incremently come around to liking the fjr with time.

wifey rode on the KLR exactly 3 times. she HATED that bike.

she rode on my Vee a dozen times, maybe. i could never figure out why she didn't like to ride with me...

when i bought the FJR, i took her with me for the test ride. she got off the back, looked me dead in the eye and said "BUY IT!".

we went to Socorro for Lunch on Sunday. she wasn't too keen on the super-sonic speeds we were going, but when we got home, she said "i need to take a few more leasurely rides before we get back on the freeway".

(she doesn't like the freeway in my truck...)

she has more seat time on the FJR now, than both my other bikes combined.

A few years ago my wife used to ride with me more when were dating. Now married she is less interested. She does not mind if I go for a day or two weeks. So I ride alone, take photos and enjoy the benefits of solo riding. Coming home is always nice.

My advice is don't try and convince your wife to ride on the back of the FJR. She may see you are having so much fun she just may decide to join you on her own accord. If she choose not to ride be happy and enjoy "your" free time.

+1 same thing here wife use to ride when I had HD but looks at FJR as sport bike.

I enjoy my free time riding FJR,besides if she was on board I'd be getting sore ribs

from her japing me to slow down............

My wife was very supportive of me buying my FJR but she didn't want anything to do with it herself. She cited having both boys at home, however, they were teenagers. She also had several other reasons/excuses. After I had several thousand miles under my belt she rode with once me but didn't enjoy it. In fact the whole trip was literally a white knuckle ride for her and I didn't go over 40mph. I let it go but really missed her on my various trips. Even the quiet weekend day trip was somewhat lonely not to mention my two week trips. After about 20K on the bike my wife announced that she wanted to give it another try for my Birthday. I don't know what changed. I drove the same, VERY CAREFULLY, and nothing was different. After about five miles I felt her urging me to pick up the pace. The rest is history. Now she can't wait to ride with me. We have taken several extended day trips and she has yet to find her limit in the saddle. We are planning a couple of overnight trips this year.

What is even more amazing to me is that while the first ride was white knuckle at 40mph, she will now ride the interstate, highway or even two lane roads without hesitation. In fact passing makes her laugh with excitement. (She is a speed demon when she drives).

As much fun as it was the first 20K I have to admit that having her with me takes riding the FJR to another level of enjoyment. My advice is to not push her. That never works. Just gain your own confidence and share with her your enjoyment of the bike. If she has ridden with you in the past she will begin to miss it and give it a fair trial at some point. My wife did tell me that she enjoys my FJR much more now that I have an Autocom where she can talk to me and listen to music with me.

BTW it also doesn't hurt to review your life insurance if you ride together. That is something my wife insists that we have squared away! You just never know. It is awful to loose parents. It is even worse to be flat broke!
