Just got a new 08 AE, in March. Only have 1k on the bike, riding around town and short day trips, everything seems fine. Decided to go down to Ar. for the weekend, for the new bikes first real trip. Left KC and headed south down hwy 69, and everythings fine. Come to a light in Pittsburg, Ks., down shift to 1st, wait for light to turn green, roll on throttle, and it is if I am neutral. Indicator says 1st gear, amber colred shift light is lit, try to shift, nothing. Cars are honking now, I am blocking traffic, so I push the bike over to the side out of the way. Turn the key off, then back on, everything is normal, bike is still in 1st gear, shift light is off, roll on throttle and bike takes off.

Continued on with the trip everything seemed fine, the bike shifted fine ran fine, in fact had pretty much forgotten about the incident in Pittsburg, concluded it was some kind of one time glitch or something. Got down to Ft. Smith and was waiting at another light, same thing as before, indicator says 1st gear, amber shift light, won't go. Turn key off, back on and amber shit light is off and the bike takes off as normal.

This happened three times before I decided to put the bike in neutral at a light and then shift into gear when the light turns green. Once I started doing that, no more problems.

Any AE owners experience this? I plan to take the bike into the dealer tues. and see what they say, just thought I would relate this experience and see if anyone else has had this problem.

Modifications, so far are; Throttlemiester, Autocom, Garmin Zumo, Escort Detector, Yamaha touring shield.

Thanks,

DCH

Happened once to me early in my AE experience, never happened again and no idea what the problem was... sounds like a 'take it back to the dealer' issue.

Are you getting any error codes, or just the yellow 'shift' light?

It could be a simple case of the linkage on the actuator being out of adjustment (or the sensor that senses the position being out of whack?). The system senses position of the actuator linkage and if it isn't where it's supposed to be it won't shift. Cycling the ignition resets the little trons inside the sensor and it is happy... but in any case it probably isn't serviceable by your average backyard mechanic, and I assume your bike's still under warranty, so back to the dealer with it and have 'em make it right.

The part of being in 1st gear and the shift light comes on, have the dealer check it out. However, I have had the shift light come on if trying to coast away from a down hill stop, in neutral, then try to put it in gear. The only way to reset it was a complete stop and turn off the key and back on.

Does it only do it at a stop? and in first gear?
One of the three times it happened, I was stopped and in 2nd gear, the shift light came on, tried to shift to 1st and could not. Turned the key off, everything reset, was still in 2nd, shifted to first and started the engine. It seems that when I am stopped and the shift light comes on, for all practical purposes I am in neutral, and nothing will happen unless I turn the key off, then back on.

And yes, only when stopped........once under way everything is fine. By the way I love the bike. This is my second FJR, traded an 05 with 54,000, for this one. Got a smokin deal on the 08 AE, was hesitant about the auto clutch, but man this thing is great. I up shift with the paddel shifter and down shift with the foot shifter. It really is smooth. I am confident we can get the bugs worked out of this one, and looking forward to putting lots of miles on it.
