If you're in the area of the gorge, an interesting place to visit is the Park Service exhibit at Thurmond https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/thurmond.htm if you're interested in history. Some of the outdoor scenes in John Sayles' 1987 movie "Matewan" were filmed here.

WV. is very nice.
New River has a old road down to the bottom of the gorge. Old bridge is still there, good view at new one from bottom.

Can't go wrong WV.

Spent a 4 day weekend in that area, 1,000 miles from home and back.

That would be Fayette Station Road. It is good to take after stopping at the visitors center. If you stop there take the time to walk down to the bridge viewing overlook. Well worth it!

I shall see. It may end up being just a ride out Saturday for the festivities and ride home Sunday.
