Now I see why they can't hear..

I rode a ZZR12 last weekend, fun bike, and loved the sound, wishing I could get a little more "sport" sound out of my '07 without breaking the bank. Just saw this mod, and listening to the clips....looks like this could fit the bill. I especially like the sound with the tailcones, not sure if they're available anymore though. So in summing up the mod...you just cut through the baffle plate(s) with the hole saw, then stick the cutting wheel into the pipe and cut off an inch and a half or so of pipe, from the ID surface, and that's it? Sounds like it could be a PITA to cut through the pipe though...hopefully not.

Pretty much...It's way easier than it sounds. However, get the good cutting wheels, not the paper ones. The wheels will be too big to fit into the pipe, so you need a brick, or some concrete that you don't mind scarring up. You need to grind the wheel down on the brick until it fits into the pipe. You'll go through a couple of them, but it seens to work best if you use solid pressure and get the first disk all the way through...Then just cut around the circumfrence.

Thanks for the info. I might try to get it done this weekend. I heard from Garauld, and he said the tailcones were still available too.

Exactly as HRZ said. Except I went through 3.5 cutting discs. Easy 20 minute mod and sounds great. Thanks again Trooper

Just a footnote here. When I originally did the trooper mod, I went in about 1 1/4" with the dremel, which placed the cut just behind the baffle plate that was cut with the hole saw. I got bored one day, and decided to take out about another 1 1/4" since Garys tailcones really mellowed out the sound. It made quite a difference in the sound with the tailcones on. Still not anywhere near obnoxious, just a little deeper. I leave for work at 6 am, and am not afraid of disturbing the neighbors. I edited my video of the different exhaust sounds, with the extra 1 1/4" and tailcones at the end. Of course, it sounds much better in person :lol: You be the judge.

Just for your info if you didn't see it. It really does make the sound deeper.

I did part 1 of this mod today and really can't understand why it takes so long. It took me 20 seconds per side and the teeth on the bit still look brand new. I did use a high speed impact drill though. Sounds good so far, but it is raining now so I can't give it a real good flogging. I can help any of the locals if they want to do this mod after hearing the sound on my bike.

BTW...I was with Skooter and Beemerdons this weekend. Skooter has the mod done with Gerauld tail cones. My bike was noticeably louder at idle and stop light speeds.

I saw this thread WAY back when, and I thought, "maybe." Though I've got an 05, my cans are perfect, so I've been a little reluctant to do any hacking until I had a chance to mull it over. Guess I'm a slow muller. Anyway, back in March and April, I was still getting used to the darkside and needed more time to consider this new idea. So-- I've read, I've listened, I've studied the opinions given: I wanted to see what cha'll thought of it. Seems like it takes me forever to make decisions about stuff like this. Sooooo-- now that I have, it looks like I'm ready to take the plunge. Stopped in at Harbor Freight and bought the world's cheapest "dremel." (6.99) Love those holiday sales. I stopped at the Depot today and bought a Milwaukee 1 1/2 inch hole saw for just under 12 bucks. So far I've got about 20 bucks invested. HA, YA READY FOR THIS? I told them what I was going to do with it and was worried that I might not be able to get through both cuts. They told me, "If this hole saw doesn't get the job done, bring it back, and we'll take care of ya ." How about that? Anyway, I should be able to tackle this soon. I'm thinking about maybe just doing the first stage (with the hole saw only) and see how it sounds. Let the experiment begin.

However, I'm feeling a little nervous about the decel popping, as there seems to be a difference of opinion about this. Time will tell.

EDIT: IT'S NOW JUST AFTER CHRISTMAS, AND I DID STAGE ONE OF THE TROOPER MOD. I ONLY USED THE 1-1/2 INCH HOLE SAW, I DID NOT USE THE DREMEL TO REMOVE THE PIPE EXTENSION. THE BIKE IS NOTICEABLY LOUDER AND THERE'S LITTLE OR NO POPPING ON DECEL. I MAY JUST LEAVE IT AS IS. EXTRA ADDED BONUS. I WAS TAKING SOME STUFF BACK AFTER CHRISTMAS AND THOUGHT I'D TRY MY LUCK WITH THE HOLE SAW. I TOLD THE FOLKS AT HOME DEPOT THAT I BROKE A TOOTH OFF THE HOLE SAW. THEY CHECKED IT OVER, AND GLADLY REFUNDED MY MONEY.

My Trooper mod was FREE...

No popping just doing stage 1 for me, but I have not tested it in the heat of summer yet. Maybe by summer my knee will heal and I will be back on the road.

The doc aspirated 120ccs (half a cup) from my left knee on Monday, and boy does it feel better.

Plus.. If the "poping" bugs ya? yer too fuking young...Buy a damned Honda.

Some of us remember "lakepipes" and sparkplugs in the tailpipes made cars fast. I tells ya, some of you young pups are starting to bug me..
