Normally, if I'm going for a ride, I get on the road around dawn.

Cooler in summer, better light, less traffic, fresher air.

But, last Sunday I screwed around till noon before setting off to ride

Bucks Lake Road.

Last time I was on Bucks Lake Road, the surface was crap and it wasn't

a lot of fun. Well, I don't know when they did it, but WOW!

It's much improved.

Here we go.

Out the door just after 1200, up through stinkin' Lincoln,

and past the Gladding-McBean Factory. (They're famous

for turning clay into terra cotta, and pottery, and tile, and pipe, and MadMike's feet.)

IMG_0317XXXXX.jpg

Then up through the bustling twin cities of Marysville & Yuba City. (Our very own Bluestreek

hails from these parts.) Just as you enter town from the south, you often see these knobs knobbied

types running around in circles, getting their bikes dirty.

IMG_0318XXXXX.jpg

Then over the river ...

IMG_0321XXXXX.jpg

...and into "downtown".

IMG_0324XXXXX.jpg

Gosh, you can't pass an old movie theater and not take a picture.

IMG_9994.jpg

A quick stop for gasoline and, uh, ....a Pepsi.

IMG_0325XXXXX.jpg

There were thunderheads and scattered rainshowers to the east in the mountains (the way I was headed),

but though it looked dramatic, it just does not rain heavily here in the summer. Actually, it rarely rains here

AT ALL in the summer. So, though the clouds up there looked ominous at times, I only ran into a couple of

brief showers. Refreshing.

On up into the hills on good ol' Hwy. 70, toward Quincy.

Great road. Sweeping turns, the river, light traffic, nice vistas.

IMG_0363XXXXX.jpg

IMG_0366XXXXX.jpg

People in little plastic boats.

IMG_0374XXXXX.jpg

I was heading to Quincy because that's the far end of Bucks Lake Road. Figgered I'd ride it back down into the

valley late in the day, and take some pictures of stuff in the afternoon light.

IMG_0390XXXXX.jpg

There's Quincy!

IMG_0006XXXXX_edited-1.jpg

And there's my turn!

IMG_0013XXXXX.jpg

But first, a quick break, and tank top-off.

IMG_0027XXXXX.jpg

(Golly, I sure know how to turn a shitty little ride into a friggin' production, huh? You'd think this was a cross-country

trip with all these pics and words. :( )

A group of "dcarver era" Hondas was out enjoying the day. (I was just a baby when these things were the ticket.)

IMG_0017XXXXX.jpg

And on outta town on BLR...

BFT.

The temps were incredibly pleasant for this time of the year in these parts. High 60's - low 70's. Couldn't have asked

for a better day.

IMG_0037XXXXX.jpg

Past Bucks Lake.

Don't have a fishing report for y'all.

I did encounter some of this stuff. Wasn't sure what it was, ......so I ate a fistful of it.

IMG_0057XXXXX.jpg

On down the road.

This looked interesting ....

IMG_0067XXXXX.jpg

...but I didn't want to get my tires dirty.

IMG_0068XXXXX.jpg

Listening to good music, enjoying the asphalt.

IMG_0073XXXXXcopy.jpg

Be right back with the wrap-up.

Waiting and running out of battery power here on my balcony .....
You're wearing the batteries down in that thing* from OM's Ride Report?!?

Damn -- the things you learn about foreplay on this forum! :chickawow: :exhappysmiley:

* wink, wink -- thanks for having translated that "batteries" metaphor, Barb :battery: :secret:

BTW, here's a map of Bucks Lake Road.

BucksLakeRd.jpg

So, I'm out here in the sticks, stopped, scrambling around, taking pictures, and I see this fellow

in the distance, walking. In the middle of nowhere.

IMG_0079XXXXX.jpg

I figure, this'll be interesting. I'll say howdy, and ask him about himself and take his picture,

and it'll maybe add some color to this otherwise uneventful day.

IMG_0081XXXXX.jpg

So when he gets close enough, I'm about to greet him, and I realize he's talking to himself,

...angrily. And he's cursing about some bastards "who think they know. They DON'T F#CKING KNOW!"

Or something like that.

I still offer a "Howdy."

He just glares at me like he'd kill me for a nickel.

Okay then.

Prolly from Nevada. :D

(I figure in about five more years, that'll be me. Wandering around on foot. Shouting at cars.)

Proceeding with my ride. Stopped a few more times for this and that.

Just a gorgeous road, huh?

Fun, too.

I went back and forth over some sections.

IMG_0110XXXXXcopy.jpg

Just needs a bulldozer little paint?

IMG_0116XXXXX.jpg

My road ends on the back side of Lake Oroville. You come down out of the hills

through some fantastic twisties, and you're treated to this view, out over the lake.

BucksLakeStitchOnecopy.jpg

Lotsa houseboats.

IMG_0122XXXXX.jpg

IMG_0130XXXXXcopy.jpg

Then, across the bridge, into Oroville.

IMG_0135XXXXX.jpg

Back down through lovely Wheatland.

IMG_9988XXXXX.jpg

Got a ticket coming through this town (speed trap) late at night, way back in the late '70's (I was ...8),

driving a '64 MG Midget.

Funny how you remember stuff like that.

"Yeah, Dad. You've told us that story about 50 times."

Some side roads back to town.

IMG_0159XXXXX.jpg

Not even 400 miles, but with the late start, it seemed like a full day.

Thanks for looking in....again.

Been meaning to run Buck's lake for a while now. With this lovely RR, I now know I need to hit it ASAP.

Gee OM, I mean, thanks for showing me the first

I've seen in a ride report. <_<
IMG_0122XXXXX.jpg

I half expected to see a shot of Kris Kristofferson and Ali Macgraw sitting in a porch rocker on the deck of the lead houseboat, yammerin on a portable CD:

C'mon good buuuuddeeee, this is Rubber Duck Penwald coming at ya. We got us a houseboat convoy here!

As much as this pains me to write this, OM you "are making progress in therapy". Thanks
Fixed it for you.... Rich
Once again Old Michael, another outstandingly amazing Ride Report with a witty narrative. Just Thank God you didn't have Niehart and Dr. Rich slowing you down on this run; a pair of boat anchors!!!

Your pictures suck and your narrative sounds just like you talk - a blithering idiot could do better. :dribble:

Thanks for posting up, bud. Good stuff as always. :drinks:

I see that Mary Ellen hasn't checked in following the last installment of another typically excellent OM RR. :p

:battery: :battery: :battery: Apparently, that put her over the top and wore out all the batteries in the house -- even leaving her computer discharged? :battery: :battery: :battery:

Uhm...she WILL be at WCR and those same batteries might power a taser. But, go ahead and type away.
