Ah right, forgot about the 6AM ferry. I saw the spots starting about 0430 local time, so that may be the case. This gives them much less time for collecting on the way back to MN. I'm guessing whatever was out there was very very worth it. Sometimes a few big rocks are better, sometimes more smaller ones are the ticket. We shall all find out soon enough

in extremely rough numbers looks like in the neighborhood of 36hours to do the base route of 2150'ish miles. i've padded a couple things but don't know what the border crossing might entail.

They'll have time for bonus collection, but how far off the base route will they go? how many miles will they add?. It'll be interesting as we follow them. Potentially they could be reasonably rested from time on the ferry. i continue to be excited and nervous for these naughtycal island riders. They've sure captured our imaginations.

How is that rider on Newfoundland going to do the 1000 mile round trip to the bonuses, a long ferry ride, and then the 30 hour ride to Minneapolis? Seems impossible.

To the four riders heading through Nova Scotia, you are passing by my back yard early this afternoon.

If you are reading these posts and need anything, call me at 902-396-7542.

You have a big ride ahead of you. Good luck.

Canadian FJR

The Ferry sailed from Channel-Port Aux Basques at 6:30 ADT. That would be 4:30 CTD.

If the crossing takes about 7 hours, I'm guessing that the bikes will be moving again by 1400 ADT or 1200 CDT.

That should give them 44 hours to ride the 2,182 mile "Direct Route" and arrive at the Checkpoint by 8:00 CDT.

Anyone have news about what happened to the Liles? I saw a post on FB about both needing surgery, but that it could wait until they got home.
From Day 9 Report:

"Sam and Sydney Liles called from Alabama in July and thought it necessary to say it was hot and humid. At least they still have a functional BMW (fingers crossed). You may recall their unbelievable 2015 trials and tribulations with a failure on their new BMW K1600. They do need to find a rear tire soon, as the tread on their Pilot PR4 is down to the “second wear bars”."
Like I said - saw on Facebook:

My and Sydneys IBR is over. We need help. Bike is in Kingsport, TN. I need somebody to pick it up at the hospital so it is not towed.
Sydney posted just now:

Sydney Baskett Liles A low speed curb hit crashed the bike and tossed us on the grass. Bike is pretty tore up and we both have injuries that will need surgery once we get home. We are ok just really sore.
(I hope it's OK that I'm sharing this info!)

Looks correct to me, less rest bonus, which riders may or may not take. I threw in 8 hours rest bonus in my math = 36'ish hours.

I'm about 2 hours from Kingsport and can go get their bike in my truck, if needed. I'll need written permission from them. If this is still a need, please PM me. (I have no commo with the IBR staff.) I'll check this forum about every 90 minutes. Very sorry they are injured. Stan

The Liles were treated at the ER in Kingsport yesterday, but were discharged at about 10:30pm, EDT, last night. (I called the hospital.) The SPOT tracker on the bike shows still at the hospital.

Riders are reaching apogee. The rubber band is taught. Riders are feeling the tug of Minneapolis and gazing at the horizon...and horizon beyond. There are a precious few mountain ranges, valleys, and prairies between them and the barn.
We're in Day 9 and "the fog" is starting to set in riders minds. Nobody can understand this time between now and the finish...except maybe riders who have done it before...and even we only vaguely remember it.

Majestic sunrises have been seen, wispy sunsets witnessed, and emotions are just below the surface of every rider. Triumph and bittersweet tears are in play...and hopefully no tragedy to come.

Give a virtual hug to your favorite rider tonight. They can feel you...theyre reading this and social media even though they can't say anything....they're turning their two wheels to get back to you.

And we're at the Finish Line, virtual or literal, waiting with open arms....and even Warchild is smiling. Minnesota wants you to come back!

Ride smooth tonight IBR Class of 2017.

Matt Watkins

IBA #332

Me on the outside: Thanks, Ignacio/Matt, that was beautiful.

Me on the inside: GAHH! (searching last-minute flights to Minneapolis...sniff)

The ferry is arriving in North Sydney at 12:30. They must have asked the Captain to crank things up a bit. Almost an hour early.

Canadian FJR

Newfoundland time is half hour ahead of Nova Scotia time, so that accounts for some of it. Still, that's 30 minutes ahead!

I think Bill has it analyzed correctly..with the updates on ferry arrival from others. We should start to see pings about 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. for us Pacific folks and I think we'll see them generally aim west. But with these folk, I bet we will see some hair-raising non-direct routes as well. Getting 7 hours of sleep before the last 44 hours (and possibly another rest bonus in there somewhere) makes these riders--in a way--significantly refreshed.

I can only imagine what their ride in the dark was last night.

I live up in the Northwest and was on Whidbey Island the past 5 days. I had noticed that my state wasn't getting any action the whole time, but have seen now quite a few folks heading up the for the Olympic Peninsula and had figured Neah Bay was in play. But watching the dots on the GPS page a bit more closely think the little nearby berg of Seiku may be a destination. And I find a bonus mythological candidate in the popular Roadsideamerica website used in a variety of IBRs.

Thank goodness. Don't scare me like that.

Per Spotwalla, a rider is lined up at the Port Angeles ferry to Vancouver Island. It's a day trip, so no return to the mainland until 3pm.... 1,750 miles looks doable to MN by 8am Friday but man o' man, that's getting tight...
