I'm planning a 5500 mile trip. Yamaha recommends changing the oil every 4000 miles. I now use Yamaha Oil and it works fine. But, I was not sure what I should do since I need to change the oil during my trip.

Welllll, you could change the oil a bit eary this time to make up for it. Or start changing the oil a little late to prepare the bike for the shock. You could phone ahead to a Yamaha dealer on your route and make an appointment for an oil change.

I would consider changing the oil (& filter) before, then running the trip and changing oil (& filter) when you return home.

Thanks for the info.

But, if I change it right before the trip and right after that means that I will have 5500 miles on same oil.

What about using Synthetic oil, would that oil last longer?

5500 miles of mostly cruise? If so, I wouldn't sweat a change. One of the parts of oil change is thermal cycling and unless the trip is full of stop and go...I'd just change when you get back.

Don't worry about it. For some reason only North America has a 4000 mile recommended change interval. The rest of the world is 5000 miles. In other words it really doesn't matter.

Which way are you heading? You might find a forum member willing to help you out. If you are planning on coming through NY you can stop by my house.

Go with "Iggy's" advice and let it ride; it sounds like a bunch of easy miles. (easy as, easy on the engine, is what I mean)

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Ohh, one last question, which oil do you all use? Is it worth getting synthetic oil?

There are many discussions about oil in this "Never-ending pointless recurring threads" area that you can search and read.

That being said, I use synthetic. B)

I would agree with Ignacio, and just go ahead and ride, you are not that far over and most of your miles are going to be good highway miles, not stop and start where you have major temp. swings.

I used to ride a BMW R1100RT and when it was new it used to use a little bit of oil and I always had to add about a pint before I changed oil. I took a trip to Alaska and back ( 10K miles ) and am almost ashamed to say I never changed oil on the complete trip . I tried a couple of times and things just didn't work out. After that trip my bike quit using any oil . I surely am not recommending you do something like that , but I sold the bike and it now has 130K on it and still running strong.

Its the heating and cooling that causes problems. I would just go for it, having said that if I ran into a Yamaha dealership and had the time I would probably change it.

Mobile 1 5w-50 is what I use. Every online oil comparison I have read, Mobile 1 ranked near or at the top. Mobile 1 is especially known for holding it's viscosity much longer than most brands. I also heard Shell Rotella 15W-40 is good as well, but I can't get any here in Canada. Shell and Walmart on sell Rotella T for diesel.

While a 5.500 miles trip I have to change the tires but not the oil.

Look, in the german service plan for dealers and drivers stood you should have an oilchange every 10.000km (6.213mls) and combined filterchange every 20.000km (12.427mls). Based on the recommended mineral (standard?) oil - SAE 20W50

I do it at half cycle on my self and use another fully sythetic oil. But when on a holyday trip I didn't change it. I do it before - tires, brakes, oil. More than 9.000km I've never rode in one trip and this has taken less two weeks. In this cases the bike is warm the full day and I didn't ride the distance on the racetrack. :glare:

I think you should not worry about. Do the service, have a nice trip :yahoo: and back home do the next service.

There is a really simple and 99 cent solution to your problem. Find a Jiffy Lube location mid way your destination. Stop by at Jewel or any supermarket and buy a 99 cents pan. You would also need a wrench to take the drain bolt out and screw driver to take the panel pulled. Pull on Jiffy Lube lot, drain the oil in the pan, put new oil in. Give them your old oil and continue on. Problem solved.

When Charlie Hoss and I rode out to WFO we stopped at a Pep Boys, bought a cheap drain pan and funnel along with our favorite brands of oil and filter, and changed it in the parking lot in Salt Lake. The mechanic in the garage let us dump our old oil in his drum and we gave him the funnel and drain pan. Nothing to it.

I went SC to Cali, and at 4300 miles (just before my IBA 50cc return ride), I picked up oil & filter @ wally world and did the oil change at the auto hobby shop on base. If you're tied to the military at all (active, retired, federal employee, etc.), just about every base has a auto hobby shop. They had a drain pan, oil disposal point, funnel for refill, etc. for the oil change. I like the jiffy lube idea, that would work great, too.
