Should black hex box remain?

Guys, I'm so unfamiliar w this bike yet. Is this what my Gen II '06 display should look like when the ignition is off? When I turn the ign on, the yellow light in the C of that black 1/2 hex blinks and goes out. The black hex box remains while I ride. TIAIMG_5063.jpeg

Some folks just can't answer a question. Yes, that "black box" is a permanent part of the display. Not actually part of the LCD display you see once the key is on and the instrument cluster is powered up. It houses a warning light.

You should follow the suggestion to find online and download an owners manual for your bike.
 
Pointing a new member to a manual is all well and good and of great benefit to the new member. When it is appended to the simple answer to a simple question it encourages further participation in the group.

Dismissing a new member by telling them to read the manual instead of giving a simple answer to a simple question has the opposite effect.

A couple of points here....

I personally did not have the answer to the OP's question as I have a Gen 3. And the OP said he was still very unfamiliar with his bike. When somebody says that it's almost a given, they did not read the owner's manual. The manual contains plenty of good info.

When I bought my bike I literally sat on it in the garage with manual in hand. I found out why I couldn't toggle between sport and touring modes while riding. Saved me from having to ask. And there are some who don't want to make that effort and want people to tell them which finger to use to push which button.

This comes to mind... "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

Erm, yes you can. That'a if you can bring yourself to close the throttle for the time it takes you push the switch.
 
Thanx, the manual doesn't actually show/explain this and as I say, I'm still not reeeeeeaaaally familiar with this machine yet. Thanx, again and ride safe!
Now that you've read the owner's manual and doesn't resolve your issue, you might further qualify your question to narrow it to a point somebody with a Gen 2 bike might be able to answer. I don't have a Gen 2 or know the answer, so I could only help you get the manual you should have had for some time now.

Directing the OP to the owner's manual does answer the question, as the answer to the question is contained in it. It also helps the OP with any other questions he may have.
Agree. Teach a man to fish …. blah blah

But the reality is it took longer to type that out, then simply answer the question. Right or wrong that type of answer generally turns people off.

However I totally understand having to answer what you feel is a stupid question. It is very frustrating when you’ve done over and over again.

Maybe, in addition to suggesting go research yourself, provided the answer is short, simply answer the question in addition to suggesting they find a service manual. They they’d be prepared for many other types of questions?

Just some unsolicited thoughts. Yall have been very helpful when I’ve need help. Thank you.
