Its Friday so here is your chance. I am tearing off the back half of the bike to do the whole pivot lube job. Swingarm etc. I also am going to have a new rear tire put on. The Avon is at 9k (that is 3k More than the PR made it) Any suggestions Before I jump. Like, Can I use an Engine hoist to hold up the bike? I have seen the Pipe set up, but I have a hoist. Have at it.

Thanks,

Tim

Just leave it on the center stand. All of the weight is on the front wheel. If you want additional safety, just loop a tie-down strap around the stand and through the front wheel. This makes it impossible for the bike to accidentally roll forward off the stand while you are working on the back end. Enjoy

i think the manual lists 20K.

if you are going to lube the shock pivot points the center stand has to come off.

are you riding tomorrow ?

I had 50k on mine before I got around to pulling off the swingarm. It was well lubed and clean inside. Turned out to be a waste of time other than the peace of mind factor.

Well, I would like to ride. I am going to see a doc I think about some chest pain.... And I really need a rear tire. What do you have in mind???? No pain today so maybe it was.... Nothing. Yes thats it.... nothing.

Ok the new PR2 is on the bike, so if my heart checks out.... Where are we riding... screw the Swingarm pivots and such.

If i can get out of bed in the morning I will be heading east. I dug up bushes and helped my wife plant roses so who knows what my back will feel like in the am.

pm me your phone number I'll give you a call in the am. I was thinking about leaving the house about 8:30.

OK I got my manual out it says repack steering Bearings, swingarm Bearings, and lightly apply lithium soap based grease to rear suspension pivots at 16000 miles.

OK anyone else?

Am I thinking correctly? Isn't it a rather poor design that has this type of scheduled maintenance? Seems like better bearings or a better design would take zerk fittings so that many miles later, if the swing arm has to come off at all, the bearings would be *replaced*, not repacked.

Anybody have experience with the cost of 16,000 mile service performed by a dealer?

Here's my advice. Many may disagree.

Ride more, worry less.

My 04 FJR is just over 5 years old with 154,000 miles. I have never done one thing to the swingarm bearings. Nor have I ever repacked the steering head bearings. And everything is still okie-dokie in my FJR's world. (As long as I am not crashing it)

To have a dealer do some of these things would cost a plenty. And they you would have to worry if they actually did it right. BTW, it was a very experienced Yamaha wrench that told me not to worry about servicing the swingarm and steering head bearings.

Thanks, Scoot.

I was a little concerned about keeping maintenance up to spec for the Yamaha extended wrranty purposes. But I can take care of that.
