Valve check

OK, this may qualify for stupid question of the day but when you are checking valve clearances what orientation do the cam lobes have to be. I don't have the manual in front of be but I seem to remember it mentioning something about the cam lobes facing away from each other and when I was reading the instructions posted on another site the pic's show the lobes facing 180 deg from the lifters. Straight up at 180 deg from the lifters would seem to make more sense to me.
