"Put Saturday, May 19th on your calendar for a fun-filled day of eating, schmoozing, and shopping in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Come join us and hundreds of other riders (judging from last year’s turnout) at Whitehorse Press and Whitehorse Gear for our Second Annual Spring Open House. It’s the perfect destination for that first day-long ride of the season.

Rides Not To Be Missed with Things to See and Do:

1) Kancamagus Highway (Rte 112 from Lincoln, NH to Conway, NH). Forty miles of slowly ascending and descending curves, switchbacks, and sweepers, the eastern half of which is along the rocky, aptly named Swift River. “The Kanc” (rhymes with Hank) is a nationally renowned scenic highway and NH’s most famous wilderness road. Kancamagus Pass at the top is at 2890 feet.

2) The Mount Washington Auto Road and scenic Pinkham Notch (Rte 16N from North Conway, NH to Gorham, NH). The Auto Road to the top of Mount Washington (6288 feet above sea level) opens daily starting the week of May 7th (weather permitting). Motorcycles = $12.00; Passenger = +$7.00 www.mountwashingtonautoroad.com

3) Rte 302 from Glen, NH up through spectacular Crawford Notch to the Mount Washington Hotel and Resort. Crawford Notch with its sheer rock cliffs and high, cascading waterfalls is a breathtaking ride. At the top, turn into the long, winding driveway for the Mount Washington Hotel and Resort, the greatest of the truly grand old hotels of the White Mountain. Its immense lobby, elegant dining room, wraparound porch, and great views are well worth a quick visit. www.mountwashingtonhotel.com

4) Evans Notch (Rte 113 from Whitehorse on East Conway Rd to Gilead, ME on Rte 2). A lightly-travelled, canopied two-laner that is everyone’s favorite day ride. Check out “The Basin” on the south side of the notch. You may also want to visit the Loki Clan Wolf Refuge, a non-profit shelter, located on a dirt road about five miles up East Conway Rd (Rte 113) from Whitehorse. Approx 100 wolves and wolfdogs are in residence. We suggest a $10-$20/person donation for the guided tour. www.angelfire.com/folk/lokiclan

5) Hurricane Mountain Road from Rte 113 at South Chatham, NH to Kearsarge, NH. About fifteen minutes from Whitehorse, this is the closest New Hampshire comes to the Alps. The 2-3 switchbacks on the west side are steep and hairy; the whoop-de-do’s on the east will send you airborne if you’re not careful. So watch the speed. You’ll want to go east to west, turn around, and ride it back.

6) Thirteen Mile Woods, Rte 16 north of Berlin/Gorham, NH to Errol, NH. A lush, valley road that follows the historic Androscoggin River, best known for its logging activity that fed the north country’s great paper mills. Watch out for moose—you almost always see them at dawn or dusk on this stretch. The proof of this statement is in the eating; try a mooseburger (really) for lunch at the diner in Errol, NH!

7) Route 153, from Rte 16 at Conway, NH to Rte 25 at Freedom, NH. A two laner that had to have been built by a motorcyclist as the curves are perfectly banked. The scenery along this stretch is positively pastoral with small, clear lakes (one is even called Crystal Lake), plenty of wildlife, and lovely little all-white New England villages. Get your camera ready for this one!

Axeman,

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely put that down on my calender.

Whitehorse is one of my favorite accessory dealers. They have an excellent inventory of a wide variety of stuff. They are an internet and mail order store without a showroom. However, their warehouse is neat and well layed out. If you're in the neighborhood any day M thru F, just knock on one of their side doors and they will let you in and give you the tour. You can try on clothing for proper fit. They are experts on everything they sell.

Buy it there and its tax free and no freight.

I'm fortunate to have a short and scenic ride of just about an hour and a half to get there.

Note: Hurricane Mtn road is a MUST ride, but don't try to ride it like the Dragon. Axe is not kidding in his description! Most stretches of the road are not much wider than one lane and you may meet oncoming traffic, 2 cars can't pass each other without one pulling way off the pavement.
