Digital SLR in Top Case

In an effort to make combine two of my fave hobbies, I needed a way to carry my camera safely on my bike and make it pretty quick and easy to get to.

I WAS carrying it in my padded Lowe case in one of the side cases, but I was worried about shock and vibration issues with it.

A little research and fiddling and came up with this.



Less than $30 at Cambodian Tire and I was in business. The whole deal pulls out in one piece when I am ready to go back to luggage mode.

I still have to put spots for my other lenses, but this was a start this aft!

My camera died today. I went to use it an nothing. Won't turn on. Tried some other batteries and still nothing. Looks like it is going in the trash.

I've carried my camera gear, in my shoulder bag, in one of the side cases for years. It's been to Atlanta, Birmingham, Sebring, as well as closer destinations such as Pensacola (many a Blue angels air show!) Apalachicola, Tallahassee, and numerous state parks around northwest Florida for my birding and other wildlife photography. it had never been an issue, and nothing has ever suffered for the ride. The bike's even been down twice with the camera gear in the side case.

I get where I'm going, put the bag's strap across my neck, and carry it normally, right off the bike.

That sucks. That is exactly how I ended up with the 7D mkII though. I took my 40D in for warranty repair and the snake of a sales guy (he knows a sucker when he sees one) says "Have you seen the new 7D MkII? Check this out...."

$3k later.....

You have a link to what you bought? I was looking for something like that, but couldn't find anything that wasn't outrageously expensive.

I made mine out of layered foam. Not near as nice, but it works. OEM top case, with the OEM inner bag for carrying.

That setup in the OP looks like you have plenty of space left to cut out holes for a bottle of Macallan's and a .45. Jes, ya know, sayin'.

Hey Mike, no need for the.45 here in Canuckistan!

I could fit a half dozen beers in there I bet though!

I've been using this case for my EOS 60D. The camera travels with me every day and has safely protected my camera for >120k miles.



Canon Zoom Pack 1000 Holster-Style Bag

I often carry my Nikon D7100 camera in the tank bag so it's ready to shoot. It's not so safe, so this looks pretty good. I have carried SLRs on long cross country trips, and space is at a premium. so I still would likely store it in a lightly padded case in the side-bag or tank bag and take my chances. I'm not photographer type that stops and takes much time to set up a shot. On the motorcycle, it is rare for me to move my butt off the seat. YMMV.
