These are pictures of the Helmet Guardian helmet lock bracket.

The locking mechanism can be removed from the bracket, and installed onto most anything.

This is what the mounted piece looks like:

The bail/hasp is closed covering the mounting bolt. The mounting bolt is countersunk.

Shown next -- the warding allows the Yamaha Ignition key to fit, noting that when unlocked -- you can remove the assembly or get to head of the mounting screw. There is a post by Fred H. to re-key to match your Yamaha ignition key. I am not a locksmith, and was able to do it in about 15 minutes.

Now you can see how it is mounted -- below is unlocked with the mounting screw unscrewed and pulled out to see it.

Just the locking assembly:

Back side of just the lock assembly. The two phillips screws remove the back to allow you to get to the key cylinder.

Note on the left side -- there is a mounting pin or dowell pin. On the right side is just a through-hole.

Helmet Guarding bracket with the lock removed. Where the measureing tape shows about 10.5" is the threaded boss that the assembly mounts to. At the top, you can see the hole where the dowell pin sticks in:

Back of the Guarding Bracket, showing the hole for the dowell pin (left side), and the threaded boss where the mounting bolt goes (on the right below):

If you wanted a flush mount with this (riveted on somewhere), you could easily cut a base piece (aluminum, etc.) just larger than the lock assembly -- bolt the assembly to the base piece, and rivet the base piece on most anything.

Did you know that you can take those locks apart and rekey them so they will work off your existing ignition key? You might have to change out the keyway if the offsets don't match though. I got some old junk locks off bikes in a junk yard and exchanged the keyways out and rekeyed mine.

I also made my own bracket for mounting them so that the helmets don't touch the mufflers.

You can see the whole photo gallery here:

I'm lost on how you get your bike key to fit

in the helmet guardian. I looked at Fred's to-do-

pics and still lost. Would I buy a cylinder from

Yamaha with my key number on it, then place

it into the old key cylinder I replaced?

No.

Here's the steps -- Fred H. has a photo documentary.

1) Remove the cylinder from the helmet guardian

2) Carefully lay out all the pin tumblers

3) Put your Yamaha Ignition Key in the removed cylinder all the way in.

4) Make sure all the pin tumblers are installed -- you'll note that they now stick out from the cylinder --

5) File down the pins flush with the cylinder

6) with the Yamaha key still in the cylinder -- reassemble the lock

(I think it took me 15 minutes to do both cylinders with Fred H.s pictures)

EDIT: Added Freds pictorial link to the 06-07 bin
