Does anyone remember who Skyway used to make up the insulated covers?
I think I heard him say something about Mag's Bags at one point a long, long time ago. Either that or SOMEONE said something about Mags Bags making the insulated cover.

& I really, really like my hydration setup. Just recently I've started thinking of a way to mount the jug so that I don't give up the pillion position. Anyone have ideas about that?

Mag's Bags is just down the street from my place. If you want, I can stop by and ask them if they would be willing to make the covers. Just let me know. :)

Not that it matters, but Skyway's shop is less than two miles from my place. Not any activity going on. Just a For Lease sign out front.

Well, if he hired someone local to do this, realistically it may have been Mags.

If we can find out that would be great, Another member (blufjr) already sent me a great idea he had for making the base (Using an old cooking pot)

If Mag was the one who made the bags I'm well on my way to making one of these units... (If she can't I'm going to fail back on having my aunt make the bag but someone who knows what it is would be much better :) ) )

Thanks again everyone!

OK, I've been asked if I can make up something comparable to the S_____y hydration system. Can someone send me a couple closeup pics of their system so I can determine whether it is feasible? Thanks a bunch. ;)

Fantastic way to stay hydrated!

I missed the first ones and had to make my own...but I easily spent more, and it was quite a project to do one off!

Anyone who even might be interested should be trying to get Garauld inspired!

Everybody needs to keep hydrated, and most every option is a PITA in some way--like the Camelbak, for me, is uncomfortable and interferes with air flow on my sweaty back, and carrying water bottles is bulky and inconvenient. So yeah, interested, but I'd love to get at least a clue about cost. Ballpark guesstimate, garauld?

I used the cooking pot solution, total cost for both sides was <$30.00, it's not pretty, but it works. On a long day I'll empty one gallon, and get a decent start on the other, but I've never run out. Fill w/ice, top off w/water & I'm ready for the next day :) .

The link above is what I ended up putting together for a long trip last year. Only drawback is that the aerostich panniers are a bit pricey. Other than that, it worked awesomely and was fairly easy to put together. No regrets.

The biggest unknown cost is what the jug jacket would cost to make. I'm guessing an entire setup will be $100 - $125 + S&H. I would have the jackets made up by someone that has sewing skills. The base support plates would probably be aluminum & powdercoated silver - I'm not sure the originals were. Is there enough interest in a run of say, 20? Send me a PM if you want to get on the potential order list. Thanks.

Does anyone have an idea where I could get the outer nylon fabric jackets made? Maybe a line on who the original maker was?

Gary, Ian had those made by someone local to him in Sonora. I have no idea who. It's a fairly simple item, someone with backpacking gear repair experience might be able to handle it.

I'd be happy to send you my complete Skyway system to look at - interested?

OK, as I see it, the original purpose of the outer nylon fabric "jacket" was to a) make the ice last a bit longer, b)make the whole system "blend" in better looks wise, and c) retain the jug in place. Is there a reason why the nylon "jacket" has to be used if there were enough web straps to keep the jug in place? I'm thinking of a 3-strap arrangement connected to the bottom plate running up to a ring on top. Undo two quick-release buckles and the jug is loose. There would be a significant cost savings. :D

A couple more questions for those with hydration systems - what size ID tube is used to convey the fluid? What is more convenient - a straight bite valve or one that angles 90°? Thanks.

I use ice maker tubing into the jug for it's semi-rigidity. I then use food-grade flex tube and press fit it over the ice maker tubing. You can pick the right flex tube by testing it with the ice maker tube[1] while at the hardware store.

Bite valves are completely dependent on preference and helmet design. You need to carry at least 1 spare so try both.

But then this is already all detailed (in excruciating detail and with pretty pictures) here:

https://www.fjr-tips.org/acc/hyd/hyd.html

[1] Or pick the ice maker tube OD based on the ID of the flex tube you use to match your bite valve.
