    Looking after a new bike

OK, assume that you've just taken delivery of your new bike. You've said goodbye to the old bike as it was px'ed for the new one. On the old bike, the nuts and bolts on the brake discs and engine casings were corroding or rusting (depending on whether they were ally or steel). Now, you aren't...

    It's Dead!

I've had it since August 03 and it has always started. Except last Friday. I had not run the bike for a week or so after it had been outside and lashed by heavy rain and high winds. I went to start the bike, it fired up as normal, ran for about a second and then died. The starter continued to...

    Mirrors

I am about to put FZ1 mirrors on my 2003 FJR for a better view. If I swap my bike for a 2006/2007 model next year, is the mirror mounting different? Maybe the new style mirrors on the later FJR give a better view anyway - anybody care to comment? Thanks

    Best Bluetooth Helmet

My Shoei Syncrotec needs replacing. I thought I'd go for a BMW System 5 helmet next so I could fit it with BMW's WCS-1 as it seems to be a really neat installation. No luck - BMW have discontinued it in order to re-launch an improved version in the second half of next year. I can't wait that...

UK Dealers Don't Know What They Are Selling

I thought I'd peruse the Yamaha UK used bike locator to see what 2006 FJRs are around and one dealer had an XJR described an an FJR and one had a red 'FJR' that looks remarkably like an ST1300. Would you trust a dealer that couldn't tell an FJR from an ST? :o

    I know nothing about suspension

It seems that the good chaps at Wilbers are bringing out a book all about suspension setup - this link shows a few pages.

Do I upgrade or do I farkle?

OK, I've got this big birthday this year and thought I'd get myself a new bike but I can't decide what. My present 2003 FJR needs a new rear shock soon so I thought I might trade it in before I replace it but... I can't decide what bike I want. I've often toyed with the idea of a BMW but the...

Price of an FJR in the States

I see so many references to the value for a many that an FJR offers compared to a BMW. It appears that in the States, a BMW is significantly dearer than an FJR. In the UK it isn't so. So, either BMWs are relatively cheaper in the UK or FJRs are very dear in the UK. Let's give some examples...

    Mileometer is now kmometer!

I must have pressed the wrong combinations of buttons while refuelling it but my 2003 FJR is now showing km rather than miles. I guess it's in the manual somewhere - gotta find the manual first.... :(

    2008 FJR

NOTE This is pure speculation and wishful thinking on my part and is not anything I've picked up from a dealer or rep. These are not facts. I was toying with a new FJR in 2007 to mark a milestone birthday (I have a 2003 FJR right now). I also like the BMW K1200GT but have not ridden it yet...

Now where did I see that brochure?

I'm sure I came across a web site or a forum post containing a link to an FJR1300 brochure that had a double page spread showing a fantastic bridge and a series of islands in Norway. For the life of me I can't find it now. It was for a pre-2006 FJR and I wished I had downloaded the PDF when I...

What is it with black bikes?

Why do so many people lust after black bikes? OK, they look good on the drive and maybe they're OK if you only ride on sunny weekends but for somebody who rides every day in all weathers, black is the worst color not only from the point of view of keeping it clean but also from being wiped out...

    UK Dealer Discounts

What's the typical deal on a new FJR in the UK? Since the FJR is not far off BMW money, I am toying with looking at a BMW next year. Now, the BM dealers stick to list but would the average Yam dealer be a bit more generous? How much could I save over list? Thanks David Not sure how I managed...

    Rode a 2006 FZ1 today

It was a demo bike that my dealer loaned me while my FJR was being worked on. Took it for a mix of fast roads, country roads and city riding. This was the naked version. Likes: Looks (agressive and purposeful), agility, stability and handling, brakes (no ABS though), engine above 6000 rpm...

    Are the 06 headlights different?

I read somewhere that the headlights are a slightly different design. Is this just the vents either side? I rather like the FJR headlights and I am hoping that the 're-design' hasn't meant a lesser light output. Even nicer if they installed Xenons... (maybe this will be the 08 upgrade to...

    Airflow adjustment on the 06

Having experienced a few hot days, I feel I need more air flow over my body when riding my 03FJR. The 06FJR has some adjustability on its fairing. How practical is this? Is it to vent away more of the hot air from the engine or can I adjust it to pick up more of the slipstream to cool my legs...

How smooth is the auto-clutch version?

I think it's the AE model in the States and the AS model in Europe (why can't they be consistent in their model naming?) My 03FJR is a little clunky when shifting up through the lower gears. Does the clever electronics in the YCC-S bikes give smoother changes on the upshift? I understand that...

    Hot Weather Gear

Wasn't sure which board this should on but... What do you recommend as being good gloves and boots for riding in hot weather? I was looking for short boots that would also be comfy for walking around in when off the bike but give some protection when on the bike. Most dealers seem to stock...
