Bar end weight mounting systems

OK,I own an '03 built in Aug '02, SN 749 my friend just bought one built the same month, 88 units in front. My bar end weights are held in by the standard squeeze the rubber and expand sideways type system but my friends has his rubber bonded into it appearently permanently.

Og, my caveman alter ego, says "just drill it out".

Anyone have any better ideas on how to get the bar end wieght mounting core out?

Why does it need to come out???? If you're changing the bar ends for new or bigger weights, they bolt into the same core, don't they? Mine did, when I put weights on in place of the stock bar ends.Maybe I'm not understanding what the difference is on his....
