Just an update to my first post. I had the tank off yesterday and got a good look at the CCT from the top. To my dismay there is no paint dot anywhere on the top. My bike was built in Feb 2008 and I felt sure it would have come with the new and improved CCT, but not so. I have 100,000 kms on the motor and she purrs beautifully so I'm going to leave the CCT for now, but the next time I have all the plastic off I suppose I'll have to attend to it.
UPDATE: Had all the plastic off and inspected the cam chain up close. To my surprise there was about 1/4 inch slack in the chain. I suspect I was sitting on a time bomb and decided to go ahead and replace the CCT with a green dot. Very fiddly job, but thanks to info on this forum, especially Yamafitter and Rayzerman I was able to do the swap in under 2 hours. I wasn't sure if there'd still be some slack (normal ?) but the new CCT definitely has a stronger spring and pulled everything tight...very tight in fact. Absolutely no wiggle in the chain. Buttoned her up and hit the starter button..........purred like a kitten! Very glad I did this swap since I'm told there's almost no warning if your cam chain fails and that spells disaster. Check your CCTs and make sure you have the green dot version!
