Cheaply Priced Oil...

A friend reported the following to me today:

I was at O'Reilly Auto earlier today to get an oil filter. They asked

if I needed oil and I politely said it was cheaper at Wal-Mart. They

gave me a list of oil they have on sale so I asked if they had Rotella

on sale. Nope, he said it will be on sale in September for $9.99 per

gallon (dino, not synthetic).

Rotella dino users might want to keep it in mind when Sept comes.

I feel so dirty starting an oil thread... :dribble:

Good info, wish it was that price on the west coast.

I bought a couple gallons a fewmonths back when it was that same price at Kragen, Sheckers.

another riding podna who works for AutoZone reports:

Advance Auto Parts will have it on sale starting this Thursday for the same

price, $9.99, good through the end of September. I work there and saw the flyer

and set up the display in our store.

well, not so unusual I guess, and I don't have a handle on Rotella dino prices.

I exclusive use Shell Rotella Synthetic which I find these days everywhere for $19 or $20

I have been using Rotella synth since breakin and have no complaints. In fact it seems that there is less mechanical noise from my engine with Rotella

The wikipedia article is out of date. The latest (CJ-4) formulation does meet the ash requirement for JASO-MA.

from Shell's Rotella site:

One negative might be where the engine manufacturer recommends oil meeting JASO requirements. Part of the JASO requirement limits ash content to 1.2%.

Oil ash contributes to combustion chamber and spark plug deposits.

The ash content of CI-4 PLUS spec-ed ROTELLA T Synthetic SAE 5W-40 is 1.47%. However, the CJ-4 spec-ed Shell ROTELLA T with Triple Protection is now at 1.0% ash.
