As owner of the FJR Owners group on Facebook I was approached by a member today (perhaps a mask was pulled back by association, having read about anonymity on social networks in this thread) and asked if I would consider taking my group private.
No different than this forum is exposed to all who care to use Google or to manually walk through the various posts, I figure that making the information and banter available to the public does no harm. Besides, Facebook does a truly miserable job of saving and searching older posts. It is not the information well that the FJRforum is - if a topic is older than a day it slides from view and there is no simple search tool available to look at items older than what can be scrolled through.
However I never thought about the possibility that people use the location to discuss private issues that they prefer to have hidden from their families and such.
It gives me another angle to consider on the subject of privacy . . . . .

The user in question should anonymize (perhaps duplicate) his facebook account. Trusting group owners (no personal dig implied) or site owners to protect ones privacy is courting disaster.

There is no privacy in public groups. Plain and simple. It isn't a question of 'trusting' the mods or owners. They're open. This applies to this forum as well.
As with anything on the web, if you don't want people to know your business, don't blab it out loud in public. Under any name.
This applies even to 'closed' groups and sites - web crawlers seem to have ways of getting around security and making what lies behind the wall public. And even taking on an alias for use in public doesn't seem to work because *somewhere* along the way your nom du plume will be linked with your real identity, even if only by IP address.

For once, I'm probably on the Moderators (Bounce) side. He has a right to wind what he wants just as we do, the topic has already dog piled anyway right?. Being that he holds a position here, well, he also is open to some cross fire back (as some have given him and understandably). It's a communication thing and sometimes it needs to air and work it's way out.
So everybody let's chill, this LONG azz winter has been making us all a bit cwazy.
BTW- I don't believe Wheatie was recruiting either, BUT, I can see where Bounce could or would think so!

We're off-topic from where this thread started, but on Facebook, my account is followed by many people I care about. As a result I am careful about what I post. As much as I really like helping to herd sheep, and respect that many of my cohorts are not so inhibited about what they post, it is not what I want my wife, children and some friends to read.
Example: I replied to Fairlaner's invitation to ride in Sonoma with the Clans with a "maybe". Well that started a shit show at home. So your facebook page in its current form, does not work for me. I have limited expectations of privacy on this forum, but at least my posts don't appear on my family's home page, and with all the private forums and difficult registration, good luck seaching anything here if you're not a member.
As far as being a valuable resource of technical information, nothing touches this forum as a resource, and while I enjoy my bourbon "neat", I like my fourms with a splash of social entertainment. The mix here generally works, but I really am sorry to see people leave because they got a correction.

Well, the solution to that problem is simple.
Create a second FB account and make the settings private. You can even use your own name and the same name and photo. Set the privacy of that alter-ego to fully private and use THAT account to interact with the group(s) you are interested in keeping private.

I’ve followed this thread and refrained from commenting until now.
Many of you know, some may not - I run FJRiders.com - aka 'the other FJR sandbox'. This thread by WheatonFJR was in no way a form of intentional recruiting by WheatonFJR on behalf of FJRiders, or any member of the staff that runs FJRiders.com (fyi, Mark is not an admin or moderator on that site) to increase membership there. I do consider Mark a good friend and fellow rider that I've shared some great roads with - and his membership on either forum won't change that.
Yes, there has been an increase in the membership of that forum that coincides with Mark’s post here. Bounce is a member there, he’s seen the “welcome aboard” intro threads. It’s a free country – one can assume what one wants. My purpose with this post is to clearly state that if Mark had the intent of recruiting membership for FJRiders, it was a goal he alone set. Personally, I do not believe that was Mark’s intent here.
I'll head this off too - if you think I'm actively recruiting membership, take a look at my signature line. My forum is not posted there. Bounce does not have FJRForum in his signature line on FJRiders (maybe I just gave him an idea...).
We saw this same bump in membership when another member of the FJRForum made a noisy exit proclaiming ‘enough is enough’ a few months ago; that individual is back posting here as well as the other forum.
Any increase in membership on the other forum can be attributed directly to curiosity as much as anything else. In my mind and opinion, FJRForum will always be the go to source for technical data and discussion about the FJR. For those who want spice and color in their discussion, well, now you know where to get that. There’s no need to be of one camp or the other – why does that seem to be the mindset? BramFrank runs the Facebook FJR group and is here as well. What is so hard about knowing what is acceptable in one environment to the next? It’s not that difficult, is it?
How about this - be a member in any group you want (I'd encourage you to be a member in each group) - post according to the owner's rules within that community, and everyone's happy... If it's too difficult for you or you chose not to follow that particular communities rules, then don't be a member there. Pretty simple - Marines need it that way...

On Brams facebook site I knew going in it was going to be more tech info and also more of a no bullshit site, and I behave accordingly there.
The Los Robustos site is also informative but it gets crazy at times and is to be expected given who runs it.
