New GSXR-1000 Review in MCN--WOW

I was happy as a clam until reading this and the MCN article. Now I'm considering trading the K1200S for the new '06 Gixxer. :arrowhead:

For some stupid reason was also intrigued by the Boss Hoss bikes. :bb2:

A good friend of mine just got the '06 1k.

With 654 miles on the clock, He hands me the key and says take it for a spin! :aaevil:

I sat on it for a few minutes before i started it, Checking out all the neat features.

Then... Key on, VROOM!! This thing is twichy like a busa in the throttle. I sat there playing with it trying to figure out the clutch engagement and throttle.

I pulled the clutch in, Clicked it in 1st, Confirmed by the gear indicater. and slowly took off. :devilsmiley:

Keep in mind that he is riding my FJR! :lol:

I totally loved the power and handling from it. Even though after 20 miles, I was hurting from the hard seat and low clip on's.

She's a goer!

The positional changes can take a while to get used to but it is possible for some anyway, that the body will adapt. You just have to want to do it and be patient.

I am up to about 1.5 hours before I have to stop and rest. When I first got it, I could go about 30 minutes. Part of the adaption for me anyway, is learning to support my weight a little differently, leveraging off the tank etc.

Anyway, I like the GSX-R a lot. It's fantastic!

In addition to the MCN article giving the '06 GSXR1000 such an incredibly high rating, I just discovered that CycleNews did a rating last month on six of the '06 Open Class bikes, including the Gixxer 1000, and again gave the best rating by far to the Gixxer. I gotta get one.

Yep, I read that twice. My heart keeps going , "Yeah, yeah", but my brain keeps saying, "You can't fold up like that anymore. You couldn't ride that all day like the FJR. That is a 1/2 hr. bike and you have enough trouble controlling your right wrist." I hate it when my brain sounds like my father. Especially when I know my brain is right and my heart is foolish. Still, it looks like it'd be waaaayyyy fun! If only I could justify that purchase..... Of course, since I doube I get all there is from the FJR, I'd probably be riding the GZXR 1000 at about 20%-30% of its capabilities.

This coming from the guy that pops wheelies in parking lots and slides his rear tire out on 193

You guys are talking about the very bike I have been looking at for the last week. I will still keep the FJR but having a real crotch rocket would be nice. I have been comtemplating the Ninja 1000. But I think I see a GSXR in my near future.

If you guys are going to buy a new bike every time a magazine says it's the bestest, you better have very deep pockets. Don't get me wrong - the new Gixxer 1000 a great bike for what is is - but the magazines are in the business to convince you that every year someone has a motorcycle which is SO MUCH BETTER than the best bike from last year. It's 98% hype.

In fact, a 95-percentile rider on a CBR600F2 from fifteen years ago will absolutely spank a 90-percentile rider on the latest Gixxer. Every year the magazines declare the laws of physics are repealed, but we are into incredibly diminishing returns on incredibly single-focus sporbikes that are sadly lacking in any reasonble sense of versatiility or balance.

Not to say I don't want one too....

I sold my FZ1 to get the GSX-R because IMO, there was too much overlap between the two. Now when I go back in forth between the GSX-R and the FJR I appreciate each of the bikes for what they are for.

I'm 45 y.o. and own a K6 1000 Gixxer. It is a fantastic bike. Smooth power everywhere....just so easy to ride. Open the throttle and it goes like a rocket, or be gentle and she rides like a pussycat. You can tootle around town in 3rd gear and surf the torque curve. It turns by thought control....

My previous road bikes were a V-Strom, FZ-1 and a CBR1100XX - the Gix feels like a bicycle after the Bird...

I am very fortunate to live in an area surrounded by twisties - the Gix eats them up. There are a couple of nasty decreasing radius corners which required care on the BlackBird.....not on the Gix....just lean it in...what corner?

I was concerned about the sportbike ergos on my 45 y.o. body....I had the dealer fit Heli bars from new....combined with the excellent stock ergos, the Gix is more comfortable for me than the Bird - the reach to the bars is quite short.

Of course, the Gix is no tourer - even with the (relatively) friendly ergos, long slab rides can become uncomfortable after about 1 to 2 hrs. As much as I love the Gix, I'm leaning towards something more long distance friendly. I will keep the Gix for a while longer, as it suits my current riding profile, however I've ridden a K1200S, and was most impressed - the ergos are almost perfect. Pity about the price... :blink:

I've always liked FJR's - the 06 model looks good.

You speak the truth. I knew a guy that was "horrified" because he really wanted the CBR1000 but couldn't stand the thought of giving anything up to the GSXR, where the 50 percentile rider (like me) couldn't tell a difference by the seat of the pants.

I think the sportbikes are the worst in this way, because many of them are purchased because they are "the baddest" and they can only be "the baddest" for at most one year, because invariably the same model or a competitor will come out the next year with a twidge more horsepower or torque, making every bike that existed 5 minutes before irrelevant.

Heck, as I read it there are folks around here on their 2nd and 3rd FJRs. I understand there've been gradual improvements, but great googly-moogly.

+ 1 --- but I want the Gixxer anyway I also want the R1, I'd like an Aprilia Tuono, but I also have this unrelenting want for an MV F4 Strada ----- can't explain it :lol: And I probably couldn't ride any of them for more than 200 miles before my back or knees gave out, but I'd do it anyway. Yeahhhh !

If you don't want it don't buy it, it's that simple, and also applies to FJR upgrades. I didn't buy a GSX-R because it was the baddest I bought it because I liked it.
