Not an unforseen happening. Piss off a town w/ stupidity long enough and the loss of revenue is worth the peace and quiet. One freak-nik was nough for my buddies neighborhood/suburb to enact such ridiculous ordinances that there was no way they could comply w/ all of them. In fact, that particular festival got such a reputation that nobody will let them anywhere near their neighborhoods, even our county finds ways to not issue them permits.

That's what happens when you walk and piss all over peoples property, a few even shit in peoples driveways, although some of the perps took a BB here and there

"No more than two motorcycles allowed in a public parking space."

Umm... so no more 5 per parking space? So they want people to use MORE parking spaces?

"Photo identification required for hotel check-in; minors (under 18) cannot check in without parent or legal guardian present. All guests in a room must be identified. Parking hang tags required for all guest vehicles."

Don't they take your passports in Europe? And the check in thing is a royal pain in the butt. I'd be screwed if the same constraints had been placed on me when riding with Niehart and the others in Maupin, OR... my parents are all the way in Australia...

Overall, most of the rules seem to be a "move along people, there's nothing to see here" act. I can completely understand their sentiments though. Looks like a nice place to visit though.

EDIT: just noticed this - "You will need to present your license, registration and proof of insurance at all traffic checkpoints, which will be more common beginning in 2009. These checkpoints also may include noise measurements"

What the f*ck... what is this, Soviet Russia? What a royal PITA. I doubt the WeeStrom is 89 dB at idle. It would be interesting if I could set something up like my brother in law's exhaust... where it was "tuned" for minimum noise at idle but once it went above 2000 rpm...

QUOTE: No loud mufflers. No straight pipes. No revving of engines or excessive noise.

That pretty much says it all.

Myrtle Beach is less than two hours from me and four hours from where I grew up. We've been hearing about this change coming for some time.

Something interesting is that supposedly the city did a study and determined that total area revenues dropped so drastically immediately before and after the rally, that the rally itself did not offset the losses. So Myrtle Beach is expecting total annual revenue increases from an "improved reputation" and the return to what they are famous for; beach, golfing, dinner clubs, dancing and shopping.

For years and years, Myrtle Beach was a family vacation spot with some night life. Then it migrated to Disney World By The Beach. The straight-pipe HD rally never fit in with the daytime golf resort crowd. It was a match made in Hell.

I had my very first roller coaster ride and my first summer romance at Myrtle Beach. I'm in total agreement with their position on this one.

Good for Myrtle Beach !!!!!!!! :yahoo:

I was riding down the east coast a couple years ago and passed thru Myrtle Beach

(unknowingly) during their "Knothead Fest"....

Couldn't wait to get the heck out of town,,, That night on the local news,, all they talked about

was the number of arrests ,, accidents ,,, fatal accidents ,, etc.. since the MC event started...

I also heard that some business would just close down during that time because ,, groups of folks

would come in ,, eat ,, and then leave without paying their bill...

Yep,,, Folks like that , sure help the image of the motorcyclist,,,,,, :angry2:

Last time I was in Myrtle Beach was in May 1991. I hadn't planned for it but it was also bike week and, even back then, complete mayhem. Although I hate the big brother ordinances, I could care less that bike week is no more.

Shades of Daytona (but better). . . .It's only a matter of time . . .
Uh oh, Wolfhound mi amigo, are you saying that Daytona Bike Week is also in jeopardy? I have always wanted to ride to Florida and after retiring from work sometime this year I was hoping that you, SkooterG, Arte and I could ride to the races!

I would think that, should the Myrtle Beach experiment prove successful, any large gathering that some use as an excuse to get drunk and act stupid or irresponsible in other citizen's hometown might be in jeopardy.

Even large events that stretch the available resources of the hosting community/county, without the attendant hooligan/criminal behavior of the Myrtle Beach experience, are being reevaluated.

IIRC, the Honda Hoot is being discontinued. :dntknw:

The Honda Hoot.....! The Honda Hoot is/was nothing at all like the other events you cited. More like an ice cream social in comparison.

(I think American Honda said they could no longer -- in the current economy -- continue to foot the bill?)

Daytona does have 'sane' events/areas for those not looking to be rowdy.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week -- good riddance.

madmike2: I sadly saw that the Honda Hoot has been discontinued, saw a lot of press on all of the BMW Motorcycle Forums.

Twas on my list of Rallies to attend when I retire this June before my son Seth and I ride to Alaska. Myrtle Beach was also high on my "must do before I die" list. Thanks to Stef I was able to check off the Pyrenees, but it's sad about these rallies.

This Fall I am going to start promoting an FJR ride to Daytona; maybe my other retired friends FJRobert and GregM will go!

According to most of the websites sponsered by promotors of the Myrtle Beach Bike week... It's not cancelled... just all activities will be outside the city.... In my opinion it will just cause the city's business' to lose revenue. But the rally will continue.
