So, I left home on the 12th and rode a Saddle Sore to LaCrosse, WI for CFO. Ya gotta love a reason to make a twelve day trip (and a wife who doesn't protest). I've had a great time so far, even if I haven't taken a lot of photos. Hopefully I'll rectify that over the next few days.

EDIT: My trip totaled 4559 miles. Here is the Spotwalla page for the whole trip. On the left side of the screen be sure to change the % fill setting to ALL.

For the CFO photos go here. I'm guessing the powers that be don't want me posting the same photos in two places.

After CFO (great!) I left LaCrosse on Sunday morning (the 16th) and rode to Escanaba, MI for the night. Tango Sierra suggested I ride rte 55 north of Shawano, WI and he was dead on. That's a fun little road.

Somewhere in northern Wisconsin (not rte 55)

As it happened, fljab's route converged with mine so we split a room Sunday night.

I hit town three hours or so before he did and grabbed a great steak at the Buck Inn just north of Escanaba. If you're in the area stop by for some good food and great homemade cheesecake. My Grandpa was from Escanaba so it's a good, familiar place to me. Oh, and a great breakfast can be had at the Swedish Pantry downtown.

The next morning Jim and I hit the road for the Mackinac Bridge and lower Michigan. The first photo is a bit dark. We were in a hurry trying to beat the rain so it'll have to do.

My plan had been to veer off after the bridge and ride down the eastern coast of Lake Michigan doing some flower sniffing and photo taking. Alas, the rain decided it wanted to use that space instead. So, plan B, I followed Jim to Napolean, Michigan

Where we ate an early dinner

The liver and onions were fantastic, as was the salad and real mashed potatoes. And, of course, the coconut pie! Sorry guys, I forgot to take food porn photos

After dinner Jim and I went our own ways. He had plans nearby and I was itching to put more miles behind me. I stopped for the night in Florence, KY after a bit over 700 miles for the day.

This morning (Tuesday) I dawdled and dragged my feet hoping the storms all over Kentucky and Tennessee would move on out. I finally left the hotel at about 10:30 and rode down I-75 in and out of the rain for two and a half hours.

Dry?! I think not. <_<

At Williamsburg, KY I jumped off the slab and rode through a bit of Daniel Boone National Forest. I still had rain to deal with off and on but not as much as I'd had before.

I made it to Pine Knot, KY and turned south on US 27. Most of it was nothing special but there were a few good spots if only the roads had been dry. Still, it looked nice riding at a lower velocity!

And settling in for the afternoon/evening

Yes, I know 3:30 pm is early to quit riding. But I have my reasons.

1. Rain

2. Laundry

3. Dragon

4. Fun, fun, fun

In case you haven't heard, there has been a LOT of rain in the area in the last 36 hours or so. By the time I leave here in the morning the rain will be well out of the area and the roads should be dry.

Also, today is Tuesday. I don't go home until Sunday after EOM. :D So I did my laundry here in Kingston so I won't have to worry about it again until after I'm home.

Why Kingston? Because it's a cheap room and between me and EOM is The Dragon. Convenient, right? :clapping:

Did I read the very first sentence correctly? Did you in fact get your Saddle Sore1000 complete? Congratulations! I know you missed your first planned SS1K, I am glad you were able to incorporate it into this great trip. Great report BTW. Thanks for sharing. Have fun at EOM while I am here working, again...

Finally got it done. It was a good ride in great weather - with the last 45 miles in the rain to clean the bugs off. Perfect. :good:

Hopefully you'll make it to another meet. CFO was my first and it was great. That work thing kinda sucks, dude.

Sorry you missed the Michigan west shore, but you probably made the right decision. Keep us updated on the rest of the trip.

Great RR Jesse. :clapping:

Yup, I had a blast getting here today! I hit the Dragon then had hours of fun getting from there to the hotel. I took quite a few photos too but it may be next week before I sort through them. I might be kinda busy the next few days. :p :D

I'll be leaving the hotel first thing in the morning to meet GeorgiaRoller in Murphy at 1000. We'll work our way back from there.

I'm having a blast riding the area around EOM. So much so, I don't have time to go through all the photos I've taken the last couple of days, but here's one I took this afternoon. Hopefully I'll get the others gone through some time next week.

Thanks. I may just do that! The light wasn't great but GeorgiaRoller loaned me a filter for my camera. Problem solved. :D

Somehow I missed this thread until tonight. Great write up Jesse. I'm also interested in how you got the shots while riding.

I enjoyed our rides and conversations at CFO and wished I could have done EOM also. Your SpotWalla map was also fun to follow.

Hope to see you next year.

Tom
