I received my recall notice yesterday. Since I already have the Brodie harness, I guess I'll be skipping the recall.

 
Swung by my dealer this AM. They got the 1st level recall harnesses in, so I'm bringing it in Monday (plus I figure it's time to add a new battery). Hopefully that's all I'll need; if not, I'll have them button it up so I can ride until the harnesses come in (I believe that's three days after hell freezes over).
My dealer told me that Yamaha is only paying them for one pull apart so If I need the other harness the bike will sit their until they receive it. Unless I pay the labor. Might want to make sure.

This is a fairly common outlook on the recall. Certainly Yamaha has done nothing to improve on or exceed what our home grown solutions provide. The analytical engineering in me isn't reassured that Yamaha was completely thorough in Root Cause Analysis or robust Final Solution.

Anyhoo, this is a SAFETY recall. You can pass on taking your FJR in for the recall now, but if you ever take your FJR in to a dealer for any kind of service your VIN will show that the SAFETY recall wasn't done. I don't believe you will get your FJR back until the recall harness is installed and I don't think the dealer has any choice in the matter.

Did you even look at the pictures I posted ? :blink: No, it does not bolt to the engine, it's all plug in connectors.
Opps! Didn't see that until now...sorry. Guess I don't need to remove any tupperware before taking it in for the 'fix' then. They shouldn't notice Art's handiwork at all.

I'm not sure that is actually true. I know that I was able to get my bike back from one of the local stealerships even after they informed me that the TPS recall (also a safety recall) had not been done. I knew that I didn't want that particular dealerships service department touching my bike (it was just there for a state inspection), and eventually had it done at Hudson.

I know the dealership cannot sell any bike (new or used) without the recall being installed. But on a previously sold, privately owned, bike I think it is still at the discretion of the owner as to whether the shop installs any recall (safety or otherwise) on their bike.

So what you are saying is that I should remove my Brodie harness, put the original spiders back in place, have the recall work performed, then undo what the dealer did and re-install my Brodie harness?

You could be right. I guess we need to hear from a dealer that actually knows for certain what their obligations are. The reason I thought this may be true is based on trying to get my FJR back from a (now closed) dealer that was doing some warranty work. Yamaha's computer did not know that I had changed my TPS and they were pretty insistent that the safety recall had to be done. Even when I produced the post autopsy TPS they still wanted to change my TPS. The way the recall is written, saying you should stop riding your FJR until the recall work is done seems to indicate they are serious. BTW, earlier I had gone back to my post and amended it using the acronym feature.

Dude. They ARE fixing it. These things don't happen overnight.

If you REALLY don't want to be without your bike, then simply don't take it to a dealer until you know there are new wiring harnesses in the system ready to go.

I mean, afterall, YOU are the fool who bought a POS Gen II! :lol:
I think it's time for another pill. Try one of the blue ones this time.

 
Recall arrived today from Yamaha Canada. Waiting to hear from the dealer when I'll be able to get the bike in as I want this done and dusted well before NERDS. I also have a rear master cylinder sitting there for installation on the same trip.

 
There is the obvious liability for a franchise shop to fix a bike before a sale. If they were to find my harness damaged on inspection, I,, from a shop owner perspective would require the bike owner to at least sign a waiver shifting responsibility back on the the bike owner until the repairs are made.

An owner who only has his/her FJR as primary transportation is a story I can't see failing ;)

I stopped by my local dealer and asked about the sub harness. 5 where ordered yesterday and should be in next week. I was informed I have shceduling head of the line privledge due to the safety aspect. I felt a bit guilty about never having my bike into this shop for work and I did not purchase locally in order to save $$. I mentioned since the tank will be pulled, how much to do plugs and TBS? the reply was 1.5 hours labor, .5 more than I expected a fair answer to be, but close enough not to argue over. They did price matched on the NGK Iridium plugs (from $12 a plug down to $8). They haven't touched the bike yet, but so far it's been a positive experience (knock on wood).

 
Came home to find my Yamaha recall letter in the mail. I've got Brodie's harness installed, which, IMO, is a much more complete solution to the problem. And I don't trust any dealer to do anything. I wish Gary McCoy was still around. He was a great help with the ignition and ECU recalls. You could trust Gary.

 
I got my recall letter today. It says not to ride the bike until the work is done but I am leaving on a 2500 mile trip tomorrow. The dealer doesn't even have the parts. I don't want to cancel my trip but I am concerned. Are they just covering their butts? Just how dangerous will it to be to ride? I have an 08AE with only 8500 miles on it.

Thanks for the replies, guys. In an attempt not to sound smartass, I have been riding and working on motorcycles longer than most of you have been alive, I imagine. Taught motorcycle Safety Courses and managed a Honda Dealership during most of the 80's.

There is hardly a situation I haven't experienced in over 50 years of riding.

Had an '81 Hardly Wide Glide that the motor shut down during a wide twisty on two lane HWY171 with traffic moving both behind and in front.

A front tire blowout on the Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge.

A 1959 Triumph Trophy that had a habit of lights going out or becoming very dim. I lived in California then and had to commute on US101.

Could name a bunch more, but, you get the idea. I have never had a moving accident on a motorcycle. :)

I'm struggling with how any of that is really relevant to this thread, but it'll come to me I'm sure. Congratulaions on not being dead? Or have you finally found a bike and parts combination that doesn't suck?

Why don't you kids just wait for the letter? If you haven't the common sense to understand why Yamaha would put "You should not ride your motorcycle until this modification is performed." maybe take the letter to a lawyer and have them explain it to you. Well worth the price of the education. As some have testified, ha, punny, this has affected some people.

Hasn't affected me, but I'll get the recall done. Like with the ignition switch and bike computer...never had a problem and I've tempted <insert name of your favorite diety here> to no end since I bought the bike.

Speaking of: When Gen Is had their TPS recall, I sent (he who will not be mentioned) my VIN and he sold me a warranty TPS. I sent him back the bad TPS (after I installed the new one) and he credited my account.

Win-Win -- I did what I wanted and his shop got paid warranty labor.

(and MamaYama got their bike fixed)

Maybe some of you can work similar arrangements...? :unsure:

 
Here is my experience so far. I got the same message from Ride Now Powersports in Phoenix (too late for your input Skooter - but thanks anyhow). And when they took my bike apart, the harness was OK but they did not put the bike back together as promised. So, I have been without my 2006 FJR since last Friday. But the good news is that the "fix" is at the dealers (arrived this afternoon) and I will be back on the road tomorrow - worry free. If I wanted to go to WFO and it had not been cancelled, I would have been SOL. How willing are you to risk a failure?
I'm so glad you posted! I was wondering how long I would have to wait to be sure I was not the FIRST one to have Ridenow Phoenix perform the recall. I guess I'll call today and confirm that they have more of the fix parts in stock.

Probably not since this one is classified as an actual SAFETY issue that involves specific diagnosis and conditional steps depending on the outcome. I think the TPS was a driveability issue and was only a remove and replace of one component for all cases. I doubt you're going to find many dealers that go that way with this one.

I think the big thing dealers can do for folks is to stock a couple harnesses up (once Yamaha makes them) so when you take a bike in it's hopefully the quick fix with the sub-lead addition....but if not they can do the whole harness and not want to keep your bike very long. But, remember dealers do this work and are then compensated after submitting paperwork and approved.

As to the quality, I guess I'll have to find out the hard way since I'm unlikely to remove the tank to check out the work. For sure, I'll be riding to Payson Saturday, and possibly to Prescott with Skooter and BeemerDon Friday (TBD). Just the facts as I know them.
ON TOPIC: Congratulations on RideNow taking good care of you and finishing your FJR recall work on time and as promised. They may now be a great Yamaha dealer!!

OFF TOPIC: Prescott Ride was today! Attended by Skooter, JetGrl, Enrique and myself. Didn't want to see you show up for this tomorrow. I did buy the BMW K1600GT!
