    NYD Two Peaks

As advertised on the California forum, we started the new year off right by visiting Mt. Hamilton and Mt. Diablo. The "group" consisted of myself, forum member Apratt, and our friend Alex C. We know each other from the Cal 24 rally, and spent much of our down time telling old stories about our...

    Hilariously Botched Welding Job

I have a BLM Accessories fuel cell on my FJR. It's a wonderful unit. Unfortunately, one of the mounting brackets had a weld fail. The bracket attaches to the frame via two bolts on each side, and one of the bolts was missing. Probably it's my own fault for not tightening it properly when I...

    05 Won't Start after 2 Month Layoff

Last time I rode it was the trip home from SLC after the Utah 1088. Then I parked it for two months while I dealt with a leaky final drive. Now the FD is repaired and I want to give 'er a test ride and she won't start! Fuel, check. Battery, check. It cranks but won't fire. I tried the wide open...

    Sighting in Creston

Location: Highway 229, the twisty part above 58. Date: Sunday June 12 Time: 2:43 AM Some crazy motorcyclist was sleeping next to his FJR in the middle of the Cal 24 rally. It was someone's driveway, there was a vertical post in the ground near their driveway gate with the address on it.

Help extracting bolt with stripped head

I've got a stripped bolt head that needs removing. It's a hex socket, and the head of the bolt is flush with the mounting bracket, so I can't just cut a groove with a dremel and use a slotted screwdriver to extract it. What do I do in this situation? See attached photo, it's the top of the two...

Installed a relay for aux lights

Today I installed a relay in the aux lights power circuit. This was way overdue. The original installation didn't have one. Actually it didn't even have a fuse. I fused it back when I bought it in 08, and should have done the relay then. But finally, today, it's done. That is all. Just wanted...

    PC gone bonkers

It's not enough that my kid's ELEMENTARY school has a LGBTQS Alliance (lesbian gay bisexual transgender questioning and somethingelse). They are freakin 5th graders and below! They have no idea if they are gay or straight yet. But now we have a new opportunity to be politically erect. Check out...

    Front fork suspension settings

Does anybody know what the little adjuster knobs on the fork caps do? There is a black knob and a nut underneath that I believe is also an adjuster. Is there a recommended "baseline" setting for either of these?

    Veterans and Shoe Trees

Veterans and Shoe Trees: A Ride To Remember February 13, 2011 The morning was cool and foggy as I left the house. My destination was the site of the Highway 50 shoe tree near Middlegate, Nevada. This stately old cottonwood was a famous local landmark, because it was laden with hundreds of...

    Ride The Wieenie

Ride The Wieenie Ride Report On Saturday Nov 20, the annual Bite The Wieenie RTE was at Pink’s Hot Dogs in Hollywood, CA. Dean Tanji, the organizer of this event, was going to be out of town this year so he asked me to plan the event for him. This meant that attendance was mandatory for me. I...

Switch sources for LH instr housing

On the back of the left hand switch housing (the plastic bit that holds the hi/lo switch and windscreen adjuster) there is a little breakout panel that can hold another switch. My bike (05) currently has a rocker switch there for my aux lights, and I'm looking to replace it. Question is: what...

80-90 GL-5 OK for final drive?

I have a bunch of leftover quarts of 80-90 GL-5 gear oil, from when it was on sale and I rode a BMW. I've been using it in my FJR for the last 40K miles. It just struck me that this might not be the exact spec of gear oil for the FJR. Is my FD now going to suffer Acquired Imploding Drive...

    I am a big dummy

Last night, under the gun to get stuff right for a big ride, in the aftermath of some family drama, I'm out in the yard installing my rear wheel. The damn axle won't go in the hole. I've got it all lined up, it goes in a couple inches only and then hangs up on something. Shove, clunk. Shove...

    Weepy FD drain plug

The title says it all. My last two final drive gear oil changes I replaced the crush washer with a new one, and torqued to spec. Still it weeps. Not to the point of leaving spots on the ground, but there is a collection of greasy dirt on the underside of my FD, presumably coming from the drain...
