you can pay for it monthly, but it's an annual subscription. I thought I could just buy it for the months I used it. not so much.

If, when it is time to renew, you call the SPOT people and pule and whine about the cost they just may give you a significant reduction in price. At least they did for me, but then I am a highly trained puler.

In addition to that. Be aware that SPOT puts your billing on auto-renew unless you tell them otherwise at some point prior to them re-upping you automatically. No problem if you are going to keep the service, butt.........
