Hello all!

I have searched high and low and I cannot find the information I need!

I have fabbed a mouting bracket for my sirius unit which will utilize the right hand mirror hole by the brake res. I have a 2003, and the hole is tapped but I didn't realize until after I had finished the bracket that it is a reverse thread hole.

My question is: where can I get a bolt to fit this hole, or can I drill and retap this hole without breaking anything? I know I need a 10mm x 1.25 pitch reverse thread bolt. I cannot find one locally so I am wondering if drilling and retapping could be a better option.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks in advance!

I'm certain it's reverse. I almost lost my sanity before making this discovery yesterday. I bought a 10mm x 1.25 bolt which threaded into the clutch side easily, but would not thread into the right side. So, I had the thought it could be reverse, so I ran a small flat blade along the threads and sure enough.

I used the hole by the clutch master cylinder to make a mount for my Escort--right hand thread. Anyhow I used a vibration damper designed for the old style stalk type mirrors..It screws into the hole -has a rubber damper inside and a female on top..They are available for either side ,left or righthand thread, about 3/4 inch long..J.C.Whitney or many other places.

From the JC Whitney site....

Right-hand thread.Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki cycles. Fits both right and left sides of cycles with 10mm thread.

Yamaha. Fits left side only.

Gawd, I'm a dope. It's been so long since I added that stuff that I forgot. I figured it was a right hand thread because I have the same RAM ball adapter in both sides. Now I remember -- I retapped that right side hole.

Anyway, I guess that answers your original post. Yes, it's been done. :blushing:

 You had me thinking my bike was a one-off or something. I read your post and then went out in the shop and retraced those threads about 20 times.

I am going to the bolt supply today on the off chance they might have a left hand thread bolt to fit that hole. If not, I will retap it. What size bolt did you step up to when you retapped?

Not a single place in town with a left handed thread bolt.

I am supposed to be going to a rally this weekend, so I guess I will retap it. What size bolt did you use after retapping?

I have a quick if not pretty solution.

Buy a cheap mirror for the right side. I think I remember finding one for about $10. Then I cut off the threaded section about 1/8" above the threads to keep the a bit of the flared section. Just hand tighten into the mirror hole and torque the nut down with a wrench.

Like I said, not the prettiest solution but it works if you're in a hurry and can't find the right bolt. Then, you can spend a little time and find the one that you need.

I tried to find a picture of the type of mirror that I used but no luck. Needless to say it was an extremely cheap mirror.

Hugely delayed response!

I did end up mounting the Sirius to the right hand mirror hole.

We drilled it out and retapped it for a regular right hand thread bolt. Just thought I would follow up for all the other poor saps that run across this. :yahoo:

Don't mind the zip tied boostaroo... I was leaving for the trip that day, so I had little option.
