US Navy, '83-'87 USS Sierra AD 18 and USS O'Bannon DD 987
No shit?!?! I also sat on the USS SIerra for 3 months between boot camp and ET school, Charleston, summer of 1976. She had chain for mooring lines back then, welded (yes, welded) to the pier. Spent 4.5 years of my hitch signing logbooks aboard the USS Tunny (SSN 682).

Yes: Thanks to all who served.

102nd MI BN, 2nd Infantry Div, Korea

2nd Bn, 1st SFG(A), Ft. Lewis, Washington

Hope everyone had a great day. The predators won and we were 8 rows off the ice, so we did.

Well Uncle Hud, they took the weld off, out of 2 years on her I had 1 1/4 years on the bounding main. It was an old girl but we got around. We had females on it so cruises weren't so bad. It's nice to hear from someone else who experienced her.

FEMALES ABOARD!!??? That would have required significant remodeling below decks.

Jeez, you young punk-ass kids don't know how hard we had it back in the day. Why, I remember one time ......

^^^^^^ Obviously some WAC attempting to impersonate a WAVE. (Don't think either of those terms are used any longer.)

There is only really two branches of the military, Army and Navy. The Airforce is like a country club and the Marines are like a cult.

You know, when I took the oath I forgot the words quickly, but now I can repeat every word. Older I get the more it means that I served.

Thanks for those that have served.

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

The Oath I took and administered hundreds of times:

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God

Note that no allegiance is given to any person, only to an idea.

The difference in services... What do they call the Commanding Officer in:

The Army = The Old Man

Marines = Skipper

Navy = Captain

Air Force = Bob

Fixed it for you Pterodactyl and no need to thank me, you are extremely welcome! JSNS!

Thank you to all those that served.

I served 20 years in the US Navy, most at sea. We won the Cold War!

Never fired a shot in anger, had my finger on the trigger several times in the Gulf while escorting Kuwaiti tankers in the mid-80's.
