I was waiting for the phone to ring all day! I should have taken a picture of it sitting on the welding table. It is really beautiful. And I'm not saying that like people talking about their babies; "OOH Isn't she a pretty baby!"

Holy gas, fartman, that tank looks beeoyoooteefulll! Looks like I need to dredge up the 'what parts to buy and how to install bulkhead fittings into an FJR' thread! PM sent..

 
Looks great.

How about cutting it down to 2 gallon capacity, allowing me to mount a cushion and a wife on it. It could be your 2-up touring model.

 
We checked the fit on another '06 with a Givi rack & V46 (thanks mr.paul !):

What did we learn? It should work well on any GenII, stock rack, Givi rack or no rack (although I would always support a trunk with some sort of rack). Also, there is a lot of room above the tank. My personal preference is to run an auxiliary pump, but raising the tank will not cause interference issues with the tail bag/trunk.

I will try (no promises) to design a simplified version of this tank. See post #209 <Link> I'm very happy with the way the Tag-Along Tank turned out, but I understand that some would like a tank for a Gen I and some might want to mount a 4.8 gallon tank higher than I would. It wouldn't hurt to contact me if you are interested in something like that. ;) My desire to tackle that project will be proportional to the amount of interest.

Looking into it, I see that Post #117 <Link> from this thread asked the same question, but I can't find the reply that answered it. (edit: DaJuice found the post I was thinking of. <Link>)

Anyway, here's the answer:

Rain and water getting under the tank were not an issue with my Tanji style tank and it was exposed a lot of riding in the rain.

The Tag-Along Tank hugs the rear subframe pretty close, so sealing it up would be simple to do with some insulating foam from a hardware store, plastic sheet and Velcro strips, or some other simple remedy. Keep in mind, when the seat is on the bike it's not a perfect seal. ;)

Joe,

Gen 1 and Garuald Rack question. Do you think there is enough clearance with your Aux. Tank and Gary's "C" clamp style rack? I'd say the "C" clamps stick out about a 1/4 of inch in front of the rear stock rack.

This does not seal the area under the seat. Keep in mind, even the seat does not seal the area under the seat. Whatever is in the area under the seat is going to get wet.

Accept it and plan accordingly.

I can't really answer any GenI questions yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll have more info.

I noticed right away that the curves on the GenI aren't even close to the GenII, but it looks o.k.

There is just not enough room, front to back for the GenII tank to fit on the GenI. The GenI is going to require it's own solution.

The tough question for me is: Do I design a solution for someone else? In other words, it's one thing to design a tank that is perfect for me (even if no one else appreciates it). It's another thing to design a tank and mounting system for someone else and offer it up for them to accept or reject.

 
I'm pretty sure the bottom plate of my tank is at the same height as the bottom plate of Tanji's tank. I was going to check the photos (Tom Melchild's) of the Tanji tank adapted to fit a GenII, but they are gone. "The page you tried to load is no longer available at that URL."

Well I had to find a way to answer my own question. And the answer is...

Let me walk you through that last photo. The white tape was placed on the outside of a Tanji "FlatBed Fuel Cell" & Luggage Rack to mark the position of the bottom and front sheets. The tank is mounted on a GenI.

You can review the photos as long as you like. The truth is that the Tanji tank offers absolutely no advantage over my tank in the gravity feed debate.

I like Dean. We've never met, but he seems pretty cool in the emails that we've exchanged. I hope he sets a record for the price of the tank he is offering on eBay. It's just that no one wanted to offer an answer to my question. I felt as if the question was important. How high does a tank need to be?

The people who try unsuccessfully to obtain the Tanji tank might be interested in an alternative. I might be willing to tweak my design to meet that need.

I really want to know... "How high above the red line would you like your tank to be?"

The JAZ Flat Top Poly works with a GenI. (I like that name. Can I copywrite or protect that with a tademark ;) ) Dibs on JAZ Flat Top Poly and JAZ FTP :D

The Group Buy for this tank ends Friday (March 26th, 2010).

I've been told that it is possible to follow this thread and have no idea that [SIZE=14pt]these are available for purchase[/SIZE].

No payment is required until your tank is ready to ship! But, we need a few more people to express interest because there is a minimum order requirement.

Joe, looking at the close up pics, I can't help but think that in a decent frog strangler the rain water will end up filling up the bolt holes and slowly draining off into the seat pan area. Are you planning on supplying some kind of rubber plugs for the bolt holes? Actually the same could apply to a fuel over flow while filling up, and you'll have gas in the seat pan area. I don't mean to nitpick just asking.
