Anyone have there oil filter covered or otherwise hidden? I looked at my first FJR tonight and I thought the oil filter stuck out like a sore thumb. Any suggestions? Also does the front spoiler or lower cover behind front wheel get nicked up from riding? Thanks

Ya know, in over 4 years you're the first I've heard to ask about an oil filter cover. My advice is to get used to it being there.

As for the plastic cowling piece. Yes, it will get nicked up over time. I highly recommend a 'fenda extenda' for the front feder that will lessen that, and then there are 3M products that you can put on that piece to protect it such as the 'Tankslapper' kit. (Though it's really tough to get it on that piece.)

Your profile on the left says-

Bike:

"other or considering an FJR"

So you really do not have one yet and we don't want to hear about your dislike of the filter placement.........

:yahoo:

The whole front gets nicked. The fork legs, fender, leading edge of the lower cowlings, lower inner cowling, side markers, stator cover... Of course, you can always seal it away in glass box.

As for the filter, I can custom paint you a dozen to match the stator cover. I'm reasonable. $13,900 including the filters. Shipping is extra, though. ;)

despite above, there is no stupid question.

When you compare bikes with experienced riders all will notice how easily accessible the

FJR oil filter is, as in : "Jeez, I wish my filter were so easy to change."

Gotta go with UHOH on this. When I first saw the oil filter right there in plain sight, I was dee-lited. EZ on... EZ off... EZ cleanup. However, if the appearance bothers you, there are chrome covers available from J.C. Whitney. Slap one on and call it a farkle.

+1 I've had many bikes thru the years and gotta say NONE of 'em were easier to service (oil change) than the Feejer.

That is a big plus to most experienced do it yerselfers!

The original poster needs something that requires removal of three covers to get to the oil filter so that the oil change would be a full 1 hour of shop labor, instead of the measly quarter hour that the FJR presently enjoys. Hey, maybe someone could make a nice attractive low profile cap that would screw on and replace the oil filter. I've heard that if you go full synthetic, you don't need the filter anyway, no?

Seriously, after bikes like the Moto Guzzi Norge and the Honda ST1100, when I saw the oil change set up on the FJR, I dropped to my knees in awe. Imagine.... someone actually thought about a maintenance issue when they were designing the bike. How cool is that!

Actually, we FJR riders prefer to have out oil filters out in the open. That way, when we get together it prompts the NEPRD (Never Ending Pointlessly Recurring Discussion) over which brand of oil filter is the best. Which usually transcends into the NEPRD on best oil to go with it. Without these poignant topics, being a bunch of old farts, we'd have nothing to discuss except our latest ailments.

PS - The older Purolator PureOne blue filters matches the (fastest) '05 Galaxy blue. People sometimes think I had it painted to match. It's actually a bit darker than it appears in this picture.

Go to Home Depot and get a Chrome cap back in the plumbing department, then go to the local Harley store and buy one handgrip with extra long fringe, take items home, cut off fringe, epoxy to the chrome cap, install, and Walla, no ugly oil filter. Just be sure to change the oil a little more often.

That should take care of the ugly oil filter.

I've got a relative who is a "chrome consultant" (official title, no sh*t) at a Harley dealer. I'm sure he can hook you up with some kind of cover, if chrome's your thing. :p

Amsoil sells a chrome filter. Check with yer local amsoil dealer today!
