I just got a call a moment ago that it was not on the Yamaha dealer site yet either? They are going to call me again in the morning to see if it is there so they can schedule an appointment.

I called the phone number on the recall and spoke to corporate. They ran my VIN and told me they didn't find anything for my bike (2006). They stated they were aware of the recent ignition switch recall, but said that the recall was not issued by them... and that they were "looking into it". Hmm...

The recall is being done through another company and I can't remember the name they told me? I will try and remember to write it down and share it with the group.

I told them NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Admin) had already issued the recall and that it was on the NHTSA website. Both the dealer and Yamaha said they couldn't find anything for my 2006 FJR (after a VIN check).

Either the people I was talking to had rectal myopia... or I'm one of the lucky ones (which I doubt... with my string of luck).

I just spoke to Cynthia at Mission Motorsposts in Irvine and she said that the name of the company issuing the recall is indeed the NHTSA. I am going to revisit this again on Friday and see what they say.

I had a call to corporate a week ago and the lady said there was no recall, so I explained her the NHTSA notification, she then asked for my Vin# and said Oh your bike is not affected, so don't worry...I am quite surprised that Yamaha Corp. has no clue or pretends to have no clue about this ignition switch recall

It almost sounds like the NHTSA has insisted that Yamaha take care of it for safety reasons and Yamaha does not feel like this is a safety concern. This could very well be a tug of war.

Well, the lady at Yamaha did say, "We didn't issue the recall, but we know about it and it is being looked into." There was a certain tone in her voice when she said that it was "being looked into."

The day the recall was issued I contacted Yamaha and the dealer who has my bike now. I wanted the recall to be completed at the same time as other repairs. Both parties had no clue, however Yamaha was going to research it and get back to me. The next day I received the call back and was informed the recall is going to take place, however is not issued yet. Once Yamaha has had time to create a tech bulletin and get the parts in stock in the US the recall will take place. The guy who called me also explained that the normal tech advisors do not have the ability to see recalls that are coming soon.

Oddly enough, the guy from the NHTSA who I talked to many months back about all the differant model numbers called and left a voicemail the following day to let me know about the recall. I was impressed he kept my number.

Since my bike is still in the shop I called yesterday to get the status of the recall again. After my first transfer I got the guy who returned my call with earlier. He knew who I was and right away told me the "official" recall on their part has not been issued yet.

I understand why most tech advisors are unaware of it as Yamaha has not issued it yet. The NHTSA posted the recall as soon as Yamaha said they were going to issue a recall. Yamaha was not ready for the recall yet. While I can't find the documents, I seem to remember Yamaha was required to send the NHTSA a copy of the letters being sent to us before they actually get sent. That may also be a delay.

Just got off the phone with my dealer. The fix is only the bottom of the switch, your ignition will keep the same key. They were going to order switches today and call when they come in. The best part was when the service person asked how did you know about that? I just printed the notice 2 minutes ago. I just told them, I've got people. Thanks people.

I hope no one was hurt causing Yamaha to act. My bike went dead on a side street. Had I been in a freeway center lane going 85 with no engine, it could have been diffrent.

Joseph , from Yamaha Corp, just called me. He verified that it does affect ALL 2006 thru 2009 models, the recall has been issued, and it will affect the bottom half of the ignition only, so your key will still work. He did not know the status of the dealers in terms of having parts on hand.

My dealer called me this morning, since we have had a (relatively) bad ice storm, they have not been able to finish the clutch install. They said the ignition parts are on order, and are going to keep the bike until it has been replaced. He thinks it should be done next week. I can't ride, so I am ok with that.

Great synopsis. It's in the works and Yamaha is working on it, but it can't happen over night. NHTSA got Yamaha to step up to the plate, but the company has a lot to do to make changes to 9,300 bikes and get all their people on the same message.

I called my new and close by dealer today and he was aware of the recall. I called the number and I asked the guy who answered the phone. He said he was aware. I was shocked that the first person to answer the phone was knowledgable. All they sell is Yamaha. I saw their booth at the Washington DC Motorcycle Show earlier in January. I plan on stopping by as soon as I can to take a look at the place. Can you tell I am excited about a Yamaha dealer so close to home?

In addition he added ... It is recommended that you DON'T drive the bike until the switch is fixed.

Any word on if there will be a way to determine if you get a "new / improved" switch, or a herring that has been kicking around the warehouse? I need new rubber this spring and would probably have the switch replaced if the serial # dictates.

It sounds like the lawyers got a CYA message into the recall..."We told you not to ride it, so if you get hurt by a failure after 1/28/09, it's your own damn fault."

I wonder if I can turn that statement around on them and force them to pick up the bike for free when it's time to go in for replacement?
