Dropped my bike off Wednesday afternoon and picked it up Thursday afternoon.

New switch.

One key.

No problems.

It could not have gone smoother.

I got my notice in Saturday's mail.

I called on Thursday (my first opportunity to leave work early).

They're slow... "sure, bring it by".

A little less than 2 hrs of kicking tires in the showroom and I was on my way with the same key.

They said I had the option of having the new keys used if I wanted, but nobody has yet.

 
switch came in this week - had mine installed today. the dealer was impressive on this issue - even asked if i wanted to keep my original key!

The service writer said you must have bought the bike from a different shop. I said "Wrong, I bought it from you so that I knew that these kinds of things would get taken care of." He explained & apologized "You bought the bike from us, we should have called you."

Then he looked at his records and realized that the shop had already replaced the assembly once. He apologized again and wanted me to bring the bike in Thursday morning and explained the bike would be done & ready to go on Friday.

I said "Back to me with one key, correct?" When I left they were calling Yamaha to figure out how to do that.

:p Just love updates when they are good. Bike was done today and with one key. They {Ride Motorsports in Woodinville] have recall parts in stock if anyone in the area needs one done.

 
I just took my 08 in to the dealer to have the ignition switch replaced due to the recent recall. In the recall letter it stated that my original keys would work on the new ignition. After the installation was completed, the service mechanic gave me a new set of keys (which apparently came with the new ignition switch). I attempted to use my originals but thet didn't fit. After arriving home, I figured since my original keys didn't fit, that they were of no use so I threw them away. The trash man came the next day. It was then I realized the originals unlocked my bags as well as released the lock on the seats.

Now I'm in the process of having Yamaha make me a new set of keys from the original key number. Fortunately the sales clerk had written this number on my sales receipt. My hope is that when I get the "original" key made it will unlock my bags. Now I'll have to carry two sets of keys. One for the new ignition, the other for the bags. Just wasn't thinking I guess. What harm would it have done to simply keep the old keys in a lock box or someplace out of the way. The timing couldn't have been worse... one day before trash day!!

 
Get hold of your dealer immediately - when they do the ignition switch "swap", they're supposed to use the key cylinder from the old switch in the new switch so that your original keys still work. The original key will then work all the bags AND the new ignition switch.

 
Good luck getting gas...I wouldn't ride real far until you get it sorted out.

Bengt is right, they were supposed to use your old tumbler, thus keeping your old keys for everything.

Why would you have a key made with 2 different profiles when the dealer should have fixed it correctly in the first place?

In a perfect world all the repairs done before the recall and during the recall would be One Key solutions.

I was supplying a link to a solution for those that now have two keys and 1) don't want the dealer to touch their bike again 2) simply don't want to fight with the (incompetent/hostile) dealer 3) may not have simple access to a locksmith or dealer that can/will rekey the ignition lock 4) don't want to screw around with it and want a simple, quick, low cost solution. There are surely other reasons that a double sided key would be an acceptable solution for some people.

In a world where people take their dealer to task and hold them accountable for doing the recall work correctly, there are only ONE key solutions.....It doesn't take a perfect world.

Now, for folks that changed their ignition themselves, that is a valid solution....not the case in this topic.

I know what your saying and I'm not trying to be a jerk. I just don't think people should consider a workaround the best solution when the dealer got it wrong.

Does anyone know the correct part number for the new ignition switch? I had the ignition switch failure on my 2007 Gen II in November 08 and took the bike into the shop for repair. Yamaha sent them a a replacement switch p/n 5PS-82501-10-00 gratis. Speaking to my dealer - he says this is the correct replacement under the recall but I just want to be damn sure before I go riding off into the sunset.

this should have been avoided ( if tech had read the bullitin / it explains about swaping original lock cyl)

In the recall kit, the new ignition switch harness has a yellow band on the harness near the connector at the main motorcycle wire harness plug. While not as easy as a P/N check, it is one way to verify that the ignition switch is the new one.

I'm almost sure you did NOT receive the new yellow/band on the harness, switch... back in November.

Just called the Service Manager at my dealer and he said "there is no additional harness in the kit" ... he said it is just a switch.

The ignition switch has wires coming out of it that terminate in a couple of connectors -- this is what is being referred to as the ignition switch harness with the yellow band.

Thanks everyone. The dealer seems sure but they've dropped the ball several times in other areas so just to be sure I'll call Yamaha Monday and ask them whether part number 5PS-82501-10-00 was the correct part to install under the recall. Hopefully it's not the pre-recall switch. I'll be sure to post back here with their answer.

 
Intersting;

The Canadian recall letter does not say that we get to keep our keys . . . all it says is that;

"affected motorcycles must have the main switch assembly disassembled and replaced with a new one designed to prevent overheating."

Any one have it done up here yet?

Did you keep your keys? I'd suspect 'yes', because those transponder keys (and especially the 'red one') are very expensive - and the notice certainly did not tell us to bring our red keys along when the service is performed.

Because it was prior to the recall and my old switch had another issue: the little dirt/weather protective doors didn't close anymore on the old (original) switch). Cleaning didn't help. The locksmith told me it was toast.

So the one key with two profiles is a workable solution. The notch at the top is big enough to feel with gloves on and helps with orientation going into the ignition, tank lock, etc.

EDIT: Just read Ionbeam's response which was excellent. I am in several of his catagories. It isn't a perfect world despite our delusions to the contrary.
